Lets talk 1970's, 80's 90's truck stuff neon graphics, roll bars and monster trucks.
Alright so I follow a page on Facebook that is specific to photos of old 1970's 1980's 1990s style trucks of all brands withthe big lifts, double roll bars, lights, neon colored graphics and all that crazy stuff from back in the day. So I thought I'd like to counter the wide offset wheel trend and break the mold so to speak and give my truck a 1980's flair to it. I went to the junkyard and saw a Sububan with an old faded to pink Deflecta-Sheild bug deflector but I couldn't remove it because someone had taken the entire hood latch assembly out of it without popping the hood first.
So long story short we drove around the junk yard a bit and stopped at another building and low and behold I got something even better, an almost mint Kenco bug shield for $10 bucks. So I then took it home and loosely mocked it up against the hood of my truck. Now I just need to think of a design and a name to have painted onto it. I also scored another Kenco bug deflector today for $10 but it was an even sweeter deal, was brand new, never out of the box. the kid didn't even know what color it was and neither did I til I got it home and pulled out out of the box, it was red, I was so pumped haha. I had thought it was blue due to the plastic overwrapping bubbling up in spots, he told me he thought it was a smoked clear visor. I've also got some headlight covers on order as well. So give me some ideas on a name for this thing and post up any old photos you have of trucks from back in the day. I love seeing them no matter what brand. I've been thinking of using "Heavy metal thunder" or "Nightrain" or I saw a truck someone had years ago and put "tall dark stranger" on it. Last edited by yellow400ex05; 01-01-2018 at 07:49 PM. |

I would also like to know the name of the Facebook page. I love the old school 80s style. Been searching for a nice chrome double roll bar for mine. New ones go for like $1,200!! I also have a bug deflector for mine, but I have it off right now.
Quad shocks in the front were also really popular then.

yellow400ex05, will you be doing a build thread? I will be interested in following this. Looks like you already have a very nice truck. And, being honest, I lived through the 80s once and don't miss the over-the-top-ness and the "graphix"...ha. But I really like trucks built to express a certain idea, so I would like to see how yours comes together.

70’s/80’s starter kit will require: - Buckshot or Gumbo mud tires - Neon accent paint and/or stickers - Tailgate net - Dump bed - Custom pinstripes - Trucks name painted on big shield, tailgate or windshield (Junkyard Dog, Lone Wolf, Ain’t Skeered, No Fear, etc.). .

Re: Lets talk 1970's, 80's 90's truck stuff neon graphics, roll bars and monster truc
Please tell me this is/was yours. I would like to know the details on the wheel and tire sizes and what is going on with the stock centers. Something looks strange about them. I've wondered about drilling the Hurricanes for stock centers, but I don't know if it would ruin the integrity of the wheel. Any mechanical engineers out there that can say how it would affect the strength of a magnesium (alloy?) wheel?

Re: Lets talk 1970's, 80's 90's truck stuff neon graphics, roll bars and monster truc
Also I forgot to mention I took the used Kenco bug shield down to the lettering guy to see the templates I had him draw up to paint onto it. I was given a few ideas on what to do based off of trucks from the page. I was debating on what to go with that didn't sound too corny. So I settled on "heavy metal thunder" in a vintage 80's style font. What do you think? Should I put in quotations or not?
