67-72 and 73-87 bumper interchange

I'm still searching for my first 67-72 chevy truck, and I would like to buy a spare bumper to weld tow bar brackets on. So that when I find a truck, I can swap bumpers, and be all set to tow.
First, do all 67-72 chevy and gmc bumpers interchange? I understand they may not be correct cosmetically, I just need them to bolt up.

Second, would a 73-87 chevy bumper bolt to a 67-72 frame? Like I said, this would just be for the purpose of making tow bar brackets, and 73-87 chevy trucks are a lot easier to find in a junk yard around here.

Some bumpers have the driving/turn signal lights in them while others do not. You may not want to relocate those lights or end up with two sets up front. As far as interchanging between the older trucks and the square bodies, I can't say.

I can say that I removed the bumper from my 72 and bolted the tow bar assembly right to the frame and made a 200 mile trip without trouble towing it with a square body truck. A couple grade 8 bolts, washers, double nutted is all it took for my particular tow bar set-up. I did not use the bumper clamp/chain pieces.

You might be better off removing the bumper and fabricating some bolt-on brackets to adapt your tow bar to the frame if needed.

Ok I might not understand whay exactly you are wanting to do.

That said, why would bolt a towbar to the flimsy rear bumper? Why not just get a hidden hitch that bolts to the frame not your bumper?

Sorry, I wasn't clear.
I would like to find a front bumper for a 67-72 chevy truck. And I would like to weld tow bar brackets into a front bumper. That way, when I find a truck, I can remove the original front bumper, install the bumper with integrated tow bar brackets. And be all set to tow my new truck home.


The vehicle that will do the towing, already has a frame mounted hitch.

Take a look at this picture, instead of using a piece of flat stock as an attachment point for a tow bar, ill weld brackets into a bumper. That's the jist of it.
