350 to 200r4
Where to move crossmember to accomplish switch from 350 to 200r4? 1 hole back or maybe 2 holes back? Thanks.

Just installed a 200-4R from a powerslide and did not have to change anything. IIRC dimensionally the 350 is the same.

I also at one time did a TH350 to a 200R4. Everything lined up except the trans lines, and they were close enough that I could bend them into position by hand. No problems with the cross member, or driveshaft. Went right in....

I was thinking about this 200R4 to replace TH350 in '71 K20 Burb..
http://www.cpttransmission.com/2004R_trans_400hp.htm but after talking to Steve over there last week, he suggested a 700R4 they build.. he suggested the 700 would fit easily with readily available adapters and total setup $2500-3000 including converter.. they provide full support for the tv cable setup and adjustment instructions.. I didn't really get into why he suggested the 700 over the 200 and I'm not an automotive auto trans expert.. not even sure I want to hassle with either since I'm not planning long road trips in it, just camping, trail riding, and light off roading.. so I'm still at the drawing board for overdrive options if I even follow through at all.. thanks for the info posted and good luck!

Probably because he doesn't do TH200 4R and he does do TH700R4. Or he makes more money.
IMO, the TH200 4R does everything better. It has less drop between first and second (which is what I REALLY hate about the TH700R4 and 4L60/65 trans) and it has more overdrive. It uses same driveshaft as Powerglide/TH350 and it uses existing TH400 trans crossmember holes. I guess if you are building an offroader and need as much gear in 1st as possible then the 700 is the way to go. But not for my money. Only drawback is you have to spend $$$ to get one that will take any power. If you have a pretty stock motor and don't haul heavy, they are about the same price. Just not as many builders for the TH200 4R. As soon as I am ready to do the swap for the ~450hp 427 for my short step I am buyin a 600hp build from Extreme Automatics.

thank you! not being a wise guy, but click on the link above.. they advertise the 200 for up to 1000hp and don't really advertise the 700 as heavily.. that's really what peaked my curiosity after reading the website then talking to them..
I was looking at the 500hp trans build and planning 400-450 max out of a 383 later to keep reliability and decent street manners.. both 200 and 700 similar in price, from CPT anyways and Art Carr has been around a looong time.. and they're 15 minutes away from me as far as gear separation, not worth splitting hairs for me with transfer case low range available.. but sounds like the 200 favors my application since I'm not taking it to the KOH or Rubicon LoL just curious if it's a GVW or towing issue that prefers the 700 over 200.. maybe their 200 is built for bracket racing 2500lb cars and not 6000lb+ 4x4 towing 8000lb toybox.. thanks again for your input, much appreciated.. and if I could get that 200 in there for less modifications or close to none, and it hold up to heavy duty use with reliability, I'll put it back at the top of my list.. if you have a chance to look at CPT website and send what you're looking at, I'd be interested to read more about it.. hopefully helping the OP and others too, thank you!

I put a 2004r into my C20 about 4 years ago and I love it. I've also had good luck with the 700r4 but the 2004r made it so I didn't have to change my drive shaft length since it was so close to the length of the TH400 it was replacing.
I think both transmissions can be built to be extremely robust and reliable nowadays. |

one piece case? aha! that must be the issue for steering me to the 700 where adapters are available and the 200 I take it, is not convertible..
thank you for that! guess the 200 is out for me and I'm left with 700 for non-e overdrive.. briefly looked into manual valve body 4l80 but alas, not really interested in that can-o-worms.. thanks everyone!

I've been enjoying the 200-4r in my 67, stock 283. Recommend picking up a tubular trans crossmember. I grabbed the CCP from summit; easy install and the ebrake cable is clear without any binding. Also used the Lokar column shift linkgage.
Bowtie overdrives has a great new TV cable set up kit. I guess I missed somewhere that you had a 4x4? The TH200 4R was never available in a 4x4 application as mentioned above. That means there is no output shaft and t-case adapters for that.
The 4L80 is definitely the strongest of the late model OD autos, but to get the acceleration of the TH200 you need to go to 4.30 from 3.73 and to get the cruise RPM of the TH200 you need to go to 3.31. For a street/strip application IMO, the TH200 is the best of the choices. But if you are going 4x4 then the TH700 is easy to make an argument for. But if you are towing heavy, the 4L80 is the way to go. You will want that extra gear for moving the load and you shouldn't be driving as fast. And a wrench in the works, if you are contemplating an LS swap, I would be looking for a donor with either the 6 or 8 speed auto trans.
