Thanks for the info. I spoke with my boss yesterday and he has used it alot. He restores old hit and miss engines and uses Arm and Hammer laundry soap in his bucket. It breaks down the rust very well and does not hurt the base metal.
I have a buddy at work that did not clean his blackpowder rifle last year. You know how bad blackpowder is. I will try this to get his breech plug out.

i think he is talking about using a piece of metal to connect the positive lead from the battery charger to....
i am thinking a 1/2 stainless or steel bolt about 10 inches long would be just the ticket, maybe.

Just put the positive cable directly to the stainless. I use this all the time. Works great. I use it on really badly rusted parts and the rust scale just wipes off. You're left with good black metal that can be primed and painted. I usually sandblast all my parts even after electrolysis, that way I know I am down to bare metal. But, I also powder coat most of my parts. If you are painting, you could just prime and paint.
When you take the parts out of the tank, you should wipe them with something like Eastwoods Metal Wash. This will keep the flash rust down so you can paint. If you don't, it will rust before it is dry. Also, use more than one electrode in the water. I use one on every side of the tank. The process works on line-of-sight, so the more you have in the water surrounding the part, the better it is going to remove the rust. If you have anymore questions, just give a holler. |

Thanks. This same guy did the same thing last year and I was able to get the plug out at the shop. This time it is a part of the rifle. I will try this weekend and let you know how it goes.

Maybe, if you hit him over the head hard enough with the barrel, the plug will come loose, and he might remember to clean it NEXT YEAR !!! Good Luck with the plug, Kevin!

I hear you Mitch. His thinking is that the gun was given to him so no real loss. Maybe I will tell him it cannot be fixed and ask him for the stock.
