Help with shifter detent spring

How does one replace the “shifter lever detent spring” so the detent will engage properly?
A few year ago I bought a tilt column off eBay.
For shipping the seller removed the shifter lever. When I went to reassemble it, I crushed the spring. Had another board member send me one, and I carefully put it together.
While I didn’t crush the spring, the detents don’t work as they should. (the lever doesn’t spring back when I release it after shifting)
Is there a technique to getting this little spring installed correctly?
