Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
I have a 72 gmc k15 Danna 44 12 bolt rear np205 th350. Th350 went out on me want to put sm465 in. What is required for the im guessing clutch-linkage,and a sm465 4x4, is the hole already in the firewall? What about wirring? Thanks.

easiest way would be to swap with someone going the other direction..
good luck!

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
For the clutch I’d look into a hydraulic setup. Captainfab sells the clutch master cylinder kit on the parts side of the board. All you need from there is to mount a slave cylinder to the transmission and plumbing a line. I did this on my K/20 and am very happy with the end result. No more wore out mechanical clutch linkage to adjust. If you want to go stock, the hole should be in the firewall under a cover for the clutch linkage, all the oe parts come up from time to time in the parts board, beware there is a difference in the length of the linkage that goes from the crank on the block to the throw out. You’ll also want to find a high hump removable transmission tunnel.
Also incase you weren’t aware, the 465 and th350 use different versions of the 205. If using your 350 205 you’ll need a 465 input shaft which can be had aftermarket if you can’t find a good or shaft.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
You need the 4spd coupler for the NP205. You can cut the hump for the shifter or buy a 4spd/205 one. If you don't want the shifter nub you can swap a 4spd on your column. The clutch pedal is easy, just get the whole deal from a donor, or bought on parts board. Your starter is wired through the neutral safety switch, which you can remove and jump wires.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
I have been contemplating the same swap. What about crossmembers? Are they different? Is the manual trans a different length forcing new drive shafts too?

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
Is 100$ fair for all the linkage I’ve also found a SM465 and 205 Adapter for 200$ I already have the removable hump. And yes I’m pretty sure the trans mount is the same. Oh and I read up on the driveshaft lengths the adapter to t case adjust for the longer trans (SM465) so the adapter is shorter no need for new driveshafts.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
For pedal to clutch fork that's not a bad price. As long as both set-ups use the same transfer case, it stays in the same place. So same driveshafts and crossmember, the coupler/adaptor/pedestal makes up any differences. On a '71 Blazer I went from 3spd/Dana20 to TH350/NP205. The crossmember and front driveshaft were fine, but I think the rear driveshafts were different due to smaller transfer case. I had a complete '72 donor and assumed I needed to use that driveshaft. I don't recall actually comparing, but pretty sure the Dana20 takes up less space in the driveline.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
GM was modular WAY before it made sense to be modular. What I mean is for your 1972, all 4x4 trucks sold that year, 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual, and th350 (that is all they offered) used the same driveshafts and the same cross member placement. Transmission length differences were made up for in the length of the adapter.
The adapter bolts to the cross member. In other words, if you swap from a 3-speed manual to a th350 like I did, you need a complete th350, adapter, and transfer case from a 1972 pickup. Or Blazer. My setup came out of a Blazer. Drop one out and put the other one in. One stupid thing they did that didn't make sense is make the transfer case input spline count in manual trucks different then the input spline count on the the transfer case that came with the th350. In other words, you need a complete t-case, adapter and transmission from a donor. You can't put your originally behind a th350 t-case behind a 4-speed or 3-speed manual. They are out there even today. Get on Craigslist and search for NP205 and eventually you'll find what you are looking for. Just make sure you get a complete set (t-case, adapter, and tranny) from a 67-72 donor.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
you could use your 350 case if you had a 465 adaptor, id forgotten about the conversion coupler that allows you to run an early style 10 spline 465 with a 27 spline th350 case. You’ll need the 465 adaptor for sure.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
How big of a hurry you in?
I am going from manual to auto, but have not started. I have TH 350 trans, coupler and transfer case. I need to line up Column, linkage and other small stuff. My 4 speed is in good shape as is transfer case just need seals replaced. Clutch and pressure plate should be good also. But I am in no hurry just want to get done this winter sometime. Ron

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
What size tires you running? I am going with a TH350 because I am running 33"s with 3.73. Not turning to bad of rpms, so that made my decision. Getting my trans rebuilt this week so I will probably start tearing it as part in a couple weeks(hopefully). Still need a auto tilt and linkage and torque converter.

Re: Need help on 72 4x4 auto to Manuel swap.
Might just get a sm465 I wouldnt really need to gear up above my 3.07,33s I could always use the granny low. Speed-limit here is 75 So with the sm465 I would be turning 2400rpm at about 76. Thats not to bad. same thing with my t case needs seals.

This is exactly how my truck is set up, SM465 / 33 inch tires / 3.07 gears. Before I did the 4speed conversion, I kind of thought 'granny' would be a usable 1st gear, but even with the taller tires and gearing it is not needed to get an empty truck moving. I do use it when pulling my travel trailer which weighs in about 4,000 pounds. The truck is quite comfortable at freeway speeds with regard to engine RPM. |
