Cross Country Trip!!
O.K. Am I forgetting anything?? I'm driving from California to Houston week after next (about 1700 miles). This is the last weekend I have to work on the truck before I take off. Trying to prep the truck. Here's what I've done within the last 2 months...
Changed: Plugs Wires Coil Cap and rotor Coolant Tranny fluid Tranny filter Rear diff fluid Carrier Bearing U-Joints Rear Tranny Seal Rear diff seal Power steering hose Gas tank and fuel filter I'm going to change out the belts, and change the oil tomorrow. Is there anything I'm forgetting?? I'm thinking of changing the fuel pump, just to be safe. Do you think that's necessary? If so, should I just buy and install an electronic fuel pump? If so, any suggestions on the Pressure settings? The one I am looking at is adjustable between 7-10psi. Thanks for the help and suggestions!!!! Shawn

Bring a tool set, silicon gasket maker of all types, spare tire/jack/lug nut wrench, all fluids needed for the truck to run, duct tape, zip-ties, wire, wire crimper, wire connectors, jumper cables, and maybe some bailing wire too.
I wouldn't worry about your fuel pump. I might go ahead and buy a replacement and throw it in the truck if you fell kinda uneasy about it. There is really nothign wrong with the old style mechanical pumps. They have a decent lifespan, work reliably, and cost like $15 or less.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I changed the intake gasket, and exhaust manifold gasket, and exhaust donuts.
Yellow72custom, I'm moving all of my California possessions back home!(gettting out of U.S.M.C.)I've got my tools, Blue and copper gasket maker, all fluids, duct tape, zip ties, wire, wire crimpers, connectors, jumper cables, and even bailing wire!!! I relocated the gas tank, so I don't have a spare tire anymore, but I do have roadside assistance. I probably will change the fuel pump for 15 bucks!!! Thanks for your suggestions!!!

bring you old belts just incase, rad. hose repair kit or replacement.

I definately will take lots of pics!!!! And we will have a lot of Music!!! The wife is flying out from Texasto drive back with me. Might be making a little music of our own!!!

A can of "Fix-a-flat" wouldn't hurt, being that you don't have a spare. I would also keep a roll of paper towels, small container of waterless hand cleaner and a small squirt bottle of Windex.

Yes to the extra fuel pump! Cheap at $20 and mine died on me on the road...miles from nowhere! At least carry an extra one but make sure has the right fittings and port sizes.

My hubby!!! He would remember all the tools eh? Don't think your wife is sitting around with the girls thinking about what tools to bring....unless you two use some "tools" on that "music makin" part of your trip!  Have fun! Drive safe!

I've driven the truck everyday since the tank swap. I don't think there is a venting problem with the tank, at least I haven't had any dificulties with the truck running wise. Is there something I should be looking for?? I'm working on the gas gauge now, it works right, just reads on the wrong side of the gauge(1/2 tank= empty and way past full = full) Stllokin, I will bring an extra one!!! 1970blazin, I will never tell!!!, and thanks!!

If there was a venting problem it would have been running right. I have heard of some problems with venting is why I asked. I had the same problems with my guage until I got the new autometer. I think it may be a ohms problem.

Someone mentioned radiator hoses. I also would put a new thermostadt and gasket, and also flush the radiator backwards.

Sounds like you have everything covered. YOu might want something to lay on the ground to lay on if you have to crawl under it (old floor mats work well).

one thing i didn't see covered, front wheel bearings and brakes on both ends. maybe i missed it somewhere, my eyes aren't completely open yet.
