W motor in c10
Might have found a 1958 348 with a 1960 tri power setup. Has anybody put a W-motor in one of our trucks? Planning to back it up with an nv3500.

Re: W motor in c10
I have a 63 c-80 fire truck with a 409(same thing) and I want to put that W in a 60-66 4x4. Keep it all stock and make it look like it would have came in there. Haven't figured out mounts yet. Don't know if I can modify the C-80 mounts or if there is someone that makes mount for that swap. If you know of something, let me know and I'll do the same if you're looking.

Re: W motor in c10
I'm doing basically this with my 61 K-20.Once it warms up I'll be test fitting the block and figuring out motor mounts.

Re: W motor in c10
Many years ago I put a 409 boat engine in my 63. The only clearance problem was the valve cover on the passenger side. I used a jaws of life type spreader for bodywork and caved in the firewall slightly. This way I could remove the Valve Cover.

Re: W motor in c10
I'm picking up the engine in the next couple weeks. I'm going to tear it down and install stainless valves and a mild cam at the very least. It looks to be a good clean engine stored indoors and wrapped up for decades. I can't wait to get into this, I've wanted a W motor for as long as I can remember.

Re: W motor in c10
I am all in with this potential swap!!!!
Words of wisdom though..."W" engines have a few interchangeable parts with small blocks and big blocks, BUT very few. Most everything is unique to them, specifically. In this internet age, I'm sure parts can be had some what easier!!! Have fun!!! |

Re: W motor in c10
The deal on the 348 fell through so I picked up a low mileage 454 from a 91 Silverado. Looks like it's time for a big block. I'm going to back it up with an nv3500, it should hold up as long as I'm not too abusive. I'll take lots of pics when this project starts moving over the next couple weeks.

The NV3500's are rated at only 300ftlbs.

Re: W motor in c10
If I tear it up I'll put an nv4500 behind it, I have the 3500 so I'll run with it for now.

Re: W motor in c10
Funny how life gets in the way sometimes for a reason. Hadn't been able to work on the truck much this summer due to work. I ended up setting the 454 in on pol mounts bolted to 700r4 but that's as far as I got. Things are slowing down now so I can work on it and lo and behold, two truckloads of 348 parts landed in my lap for a really good price. I'm about to embark on a journey of discovery as I build out a 434 stroker w-motor with a tripower on it. Will post up pics soon.

Re: W motor in c10
What kind of machine work did you have to do to the crank or did you buy one of the stroker cranks? I have a good 454 crank, trying to figure out if I want to use it or get one that's ready to drop in.
