Rear Shocks...

I am working on a 1947 3600 with stock frame and leaf springs. What are you guys using for rear shocks to replace the stock lever shocks?

Re: Rear Shocks...

What I would do if I was doing it an what you probably want to have it resemble a stock 51/54 3600 rear shock setup are two different things.

Someone might have a stock 3600 chassis that they hopefully can get you some photos of the rear shock setup to show you how it looks. Back in the 70's we would have gone to the wrecking yard and cut or unbolted the pieces off a 51/54 and taken them home and mounted them on our truck. Not so easy to do now when you don't find the trucks in wrecking yards.

This Ebay add is for a 54 3600 chassis. if you look close and use a bit of imagination you can see how the stock 53 shocks were mounted. https://www.ebay.com/i/263610846608?...RoC1vgQAvD_BwE

Now that you can see that, what I would do if it were me is make up a crossmember that went over the rear axle from frame rail to frame rail with a pair of shock studs fastened to it correctly spaced to have the shocks mounted at the right angle and come up with some brackets that bolted to the back u bolts to run later model (like 70's 80's Dodge pickup or van) shocks with an eye on top and bottom. That is the setup I have on my 3100. Or build some brackets that somewhat simulate what the stock 53 setup looks like to use your shocks of choice.

48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Rear Shocks...

yep, prolly gotta fab some mounts unless somebody here has a set kicking around. wrecking yard may reveal some brackets you could use from something else, or save that time and just fab something that will work. maybe somebody doing an s10 swap would have some? try joedoh yet? he may be able to find something with some dimensions if nothing else.

Re: Rear Shocks...

I already fabbed a crossmember that can take either a post or a loop top shock (can make any lower mount, once I get the shocks)......I was just wondering what SHOCK everyone was using....

Re: Rear Shocks...

I would say go on a shock manufaterers site and look up specs for something new that will be around for a long time to come. Get a compressed and an extended dimension for something in your dimensions required. Call a local auto parts place and see about in stock items. Pick something in stock or in warehouse close by. Then fab end mounts as required. If sticking with a load hauler then get something from a truck with close to same gvw as yours.

I'd say that he could use some good detailed pictures right now. That Ebay link I posted requires a lot of imagination and visualization.

I hope this helps. This truck is self lowering itself so its hard to get under. If need be I can start the bobcat and pick it up. Please let me know if you need anything more specific.

Re: Rear Shocks...

I would say the shock with the single bolt end, spike, would be harder to source than an eyelet or the style with 2 bolts holding it on at the top. try a shock from something new and easily sourced like, say, a 2015 silverado 3/4 ton rear shock. they should be about 16" compressed and about 26" extended with an eyelet on both ends. does that sorta fit your need for lengths?
