timing belt gear

ok here it is i'm asking this question for my brother.

he wants to replace the timing belt with timing gear (gear drive)
is this what is it?
is that possible?

yes,,,, if it the right one for the application,,,,,the one pictured is also a noisy drive.....you will get a whine, sounds kinda like a blower

What does your brother drive? I don't think they make many (if any) gear drives to replace belts.

so u get the gears and still keep the timing belt?

he's got a 72 big block it's in the shop for a new paint

My buddy had the Not Noisy version of those gear drives and they were still noisy!! He said if he had it to do over he would just get a GOOD set of double rollers. Just an opinion though!!!

OK, you're replacing a timing chain, not belt.
I guess that is my fault, when some one says belt, I picture a front wheel drive sh!t box or whatever. (Like the tiiming belt I just did last night on the wife's Contour)
The timing gears are nice and acurate, but even the quiet ones make a bunch of noise. The noise seems 'cool' at first, but if it is a daily driver, they well become very irritating in a short time.
A quality double roller will stay tight for a good 50,000, and remain serviciable for another 30,000-40,000. So in reality, the durability or extended life is not much of a selling point.
Onless it is a race only, or more time on the strip than on the street, then the only main reason to do this is for the noise.

you dump the belt/chain and install gear drive, you can get it through Summitracing. If you call them they are very knowledgeable on it

I don't understand why they can't make them quiet.

My scout has factory timing gears and you can't hear them...

Every Pontic 2.5 (151 ci Iron duke) has timing gears, as do many inlines has gears, and they are dead quiet too.

I think that the reason might be the engine design.

the engines originally designed for gears probobly all have counter rotating cam and crank shaft. This allows the gears to directly intermesh instead of having to have an intermediate gear (or gears as is the case in the pictures) which maybe leads to the gear noise). The cut of the gear also affects the noise. Straight cut gears are noisier but stronger than the heli cut gears (IIRC on the second name), which are quieter.

Sound plausible?

most of the time those gears were also plastic. the only ones I ever found to be somewhat quiet were the Crowers that come with there own cover but do you want to spend $350.
