So I bought a 68 K20 from a member here...

....it was a nice 1968 K20 that I was extremely excited to get! I talked to the fella on the phone and sent text back and forth. We agreed on price. I asked if a personal check was OK instead of a wire transfer, I said I can’t pick the truck up for a couple months (he said OK) but I’ll pay you IN FULL now ($11,500) and there will be plenty of time for the check to clear the bank. He agreed. The check was sent along with a picture of the envelope the day I dropped it in the mail.

Fast forward to yesterday...this is a text I got, now mind you, no phone call, no I’m sorry.....just this.

“I just got your envelope and mailed it back to you. I thought it was lost or not mailed so I showed the truck to a guy and he bought it on the spot“

Does a persons word mean nothing anymore? When I grew up your word meant everything, it was your bond.

That's prime dog eat dog mentality. That text was pure BS. A call or text to assure the money was sent was in order once the seller had doubt and certainly once someone else came along with an offer. "I have it sold with money on the way. Let me check status with the buyer and you have first option if he has flaked out". If buyer #2 is a serious buyer, you are not jeopardizing a sale to him if buyer #1 hasn't done what he said. It's not like he'll go buy one elsewhere around the corner because he needs the truck today. This isn't a new car dealership deal where multiple dealers offer the same thing and would be glad to take a sale from their competition... right now!

There is the sick side of dealing that says first person with money in hand gets the prize. I figure those people know their word is no good so they don't trust the word of others. We expect of others what we know they can expect of ourselves. If you are trusting and honest you expect that of others. The suspicious ones are the guilty ones.


I saw an enclosed 10' trailer with a for sale sign, $800, in front of a stained glass business around the corner from the scrap yard. It was the middle of the work day, middle of the week, and I was getting rid of the aluminum siding we had just stripped, then get back to my crew to finish the work day. It was such a good deal I had to make time to stop. I told the lady my situation, no time to go get cash, and asked if I could give her a $200 check and wait until Friday afternoon to pay the total in cash, get the title, and take it away. She agreed to that. The deal was made, I had just bought a trailer.

We worked till noon Friday, I paid my guys for the whole day, I get there about 1:00 with cash, and I don't see the trailer on the property. I walk in and she tells me someone saw it after I left and offered her $1,000. This business owner sure doesn't know what a good business transaction is. She felt handing me back my check made it ok. That trailer was sold. As soon as she received my money that sign should have come off that trailer. I paid her full asking price. If she was asking $1,000 I would have given her $1,000. The only reason the other person offered more than asking price was because it had already been sold. If that person had been there first they would have paid her $800 same as me. Some people are so corrupt and they don't even realize it.

Ouch, that's a terrible business dealing, especially when you're in contact via phone and text, and especially a member. I've been in your shoes many a time, People just ain't right anymore

I’m not going to take that 500 bet, I’m afraid I would lose.

The integrity of certain people is definitely poor to very bad. True colors will show soon enough. As said earlier, you are likely better off this didn’t work out. If he conducts business this way, what else is going on with the truck or deal he is not talking about.

This is a sticky issue.

The seller really has no guarantee the deal is going to happen. Sure, "your word is your bond", but I'd hate to pass on cash when someone half the country away is mailing me a check.

I get the buyer is trying to avoid bank fees but honestly they should have gotten a cashiers check drafted at their bank (about $10) and then sent it via overnight mail (about $30) then it would have been a slam dunk.

You're going to spend about $1k getting it home anyways.

Sucks for everyone involved. Sorry it happened but I think everyone should be "understanding" of each persons situation.

This just sucks. I just sold a truck to a fellow member. Due to covid, it took an extra couple months for him to pick it up. I had his deposit and never considered selling to someone else. In my eyes it was his truck. I just don't understand people that don't live up to their word......

That is one of the reasons why I shelved this hobby as my free time fun thing. Folks don't have integrity anymore or misrepresenting (driving a distance to look at something that was described as "minimal rust") or thinking there vehicle is gold plated under the paint.
Its between me and the fish these days.
I wouldn't give two seconds of thought after that, with 11.5K of your money floating around out there, I would put his member name and as described over in the bad deal section. Should help some one else out from dealing with this guy.

While it is unfortunate at least he didnt buy it and later find issues that should have been fixed or even discussed by the seller. Its just not very ethical IMHO

With the sellers obvious lack of integrity your lucky he didn't take your money and sell it to someone else. You wouldn't have know for months and by then it would have been hard to get your money back. Your probably in different states, it would have been a night mare. Consider yourself lucky your free of this guy.

Many sellers get lead down the path a few more days a few more weeks
I had that with selling a truck 2 different buyers dragged it out never bought the truck i ended up selling it to someone else a year later

I would not feel comfortable paying for a truck in full and leave it there for months on end
I have had a truck i sold take 4 months to be picked up

Since 05 working out a deal on a 67 rs ss camaro i have been leary on purchase vehicales
Seller tried dragging it out saying his buddy had the front clip weeks go buy he offers me clear title to the car no payment i decline something fishy he admits he paid some buddy of his to steal a front clip i flew there to buy the car wasted a month in that city

I'm not justifying what he did was ok, because it was wrong. But from a sellers side, until cash in hand you never really know how it's going to play out. Case in point, I "sold" my 67 Camaro back in March and still getting the run around with the buyer. He left me a small deposit, but I've been waiting months for him to come pay in full and get the car. I'm just about ready to put it up for sale again.

I know, but from my understanding he did not receive the cheque yet. If he had the cheque why would he sell it again? Just trying to say that from the sellers world there are bad apples out there and a bad experience or two can ruin it for the rest of others. I took someones's word and I'm still waiting.

Cash is king. Pay in cash and take vehicle away right then and there. Otherwise you are at risk of this type of thing happening. If a seller does not have a clear title, walk away.

If I sell a vehicle, it is always based on first person with full cash gets it. I will not take a deposit to hold and will not hold for any reason. Show me the cash baby!

Buyer is only at risk if dealing with the unscrupulous.

Even if you offered your vehicle to the whole world on the world wide web? Your mentality is ok for a local sale or a swap meet. So you would use the great benefit of national exposure to reach the largest buyer pool, knowing that most could not possibly be at your door with cash within 24 hours, but if a serious buyer (such as 57Napco) had payment on it's way immediately after getting off the phone, you would sell it out from under him to the guy down the street?

We are talking about a deal between members of this site. No, just because someone is a member does not constitute they run on good scruples (see above). But any member who reads thread regularly knows more about 57Napco than any other internet source for truck sales. A member would know what I know about this member. I'd bet my $500 we have witnessed him purchasing more fine vintage 4wd trucks here than any other member. He obviously is a straight shooter when it comes to making purchase transactions or we would not have been awarded so many fine classics. If he says he's buying it, he is buying it... as long as the truck was honestly represented. And I am sure he knows all the ways to assure that as much as possible (again, relies on honest seller) to make a sight unseen purchase. If this member is one of us and not just here to feed off of members, he would know these things at this point. He would know his truck was already sold when someone else necked in on his deal

I would agree if that is what the seller said, but he didn't. He accepted the deal and that should have been it!

I have sold a few vehicles and when I talk to people that want to think about it or delay, I say fine but first one with cash owns it. They know where they stand, then it's up to them if they want it or risk losing it.

This was not right as described!
