Differences between '82 &'83 rear ends

What is the differences between '82 and earlier 1/2 ton rear ends and '83 to '87 rear ends. I have a rear end under a '70 model that is out of a '73 to '87 truck (bought it that way not sure which year). I have a posi unit and gears out of a '69 model and I want to put it into the later model housing. My question is will it work?
Thanks, Dennis

Just depends. Count the bolts on the rear end cover. This will tell you if it will work. If the rear you have now has 12 bolts, it should work.

I think they went to 10 bolts in mid 82.

Most 78 and up half tons will have 10 bolt rear ends. They continued to use 12 bolts in some applications, but I've never seen anything that would say what their logic was. My 80 Indy Hauler has its original 10 bolt.

they stopped using the 12 bolt altogether in '81, but started using the 10 bolt in '78.
