Question What do I need??

Most of you know I have the 67/68 Ramp truck. I've upgraded the front end to a 86 disc brakes. I want to up grade the rear end now. But I have no idea what I need to do it. Any info is appreciated on what to look for and what to call it.

The dually rear end has no E brakes and it's a pain to load sometimes and park it on hills. I really would like some good instructions on what I need to look for in a yard to get e brakes on this thing.

Would it be worth it to find a late model rear end with all the brakes still in place on it are just buy the parts for what I have? If anyone has links for parts would be great.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: What do I need??

My 2 cents is to up grade what you have. Several Sat. morning TV shows show up grading the rear brakes lately.

I would love to just add the parts for the brakes I have now. But I need to know what to look for. I need a source to ask what I need and to know what rear end I'm working on. I don't have a clue other than its a dually with 8 lugs.

What year do you have? I know of a c-30 dually ( think its a 68) in a junk yard near me I can go look at it for you.

Thanks, the truck is titled as a 67. What rear end is a good question. What do I look for on it as far marking to tell? Is there something on it that will say? I don't have a clue. Here are some pictures I just took of it.

Barnfind46,
Not sure but it looks a lot like the Corporate HO52 rear I used to have in my '68 3/4 ton. I swapped mine for a 2002 14bolt with disc brakes. I went that route because my old rear needed a lot of parts and some were hard to find/expensive. The used rear was $150.00 at the salvage yard plus my labor. I did have to have the drive shaft shortened. I am happy with it. Went from a 4.56 gear to a 3.75. Not sure on the width of the dual wheel axles but mine was about three inches wider than the old one. If your rear is in good shape you may want to stick to just the E-brake parts. I kind of panic when my truck is down for too long. I tend to use it every day.
I just had a 86 3500 front end installed with disc brakes back in the summer. I'd love to find a rear end to go under it with disc. That would be a great addition to it. The drive shaft wouldn't be any problem either. I have a great drive shaft place close by.

Question Re: What do I need??

I went out and cleaned up some numbers on the center section. Anybody care to explain what they are and mean.

Re: What do I need??

The problem with using the disk kits like above is that they mostly use the Cadillac eldorado calipers which are not very strong or reliable. If it was me and you wanted to go to disks I would look for an aam 11.5 from an 01-09 Silverado with a duramax or 8.1 and a dual rear wheels. Having said that, this is how I put late model disks on an older 14 bolt. This method should work for your HO72 as well but it’s not the cheapest method especially with out a donor axle. The benefit is that you don’t have to move perches and shock mounts like you do the late model swap. I mostly did this swap to be different and because I could...
The late model e brake setup is much better than the eldorado e brake caliper setup mentioned above.

Yes , that is my one concern as well. I did the disc brakes on my C-10 and it uses the caddy caliper and I'm not impressed at all with the park brake. I'd like to find all the parts to just fix my drums so they work. If I could find a whole rear end with disc that would bolt in with minimum work I would do it maybe. I'd rather fix what I have though.

Re: What do I need??

Fixing what you have is definitely the most cost effective thing to do if you aren’t dead set on disks.

Re: What do I need??

HO 72 sounds right. my brain does not work well with numbers. I think the full floater 14 bolts from AAM are factory discs after 2000 on the silverados but not sure about the duallys.

Re: What do I need??

You could get an old-school hydraulic brake lock that would hold the rear.

https://www.mico.com/products/lever-lock

Depending on transmission might be able to put a park-brake band on the output. I've seen them on 4-speeds in C50 kind of trucks. Maybe adaptable?

I have looked at these before and all their stuff says to use with normal park brake. Some even say not to use it as a brake???????
Out of their manual for the lever lock:
Set vehicle park brake. Then apply lever lock to full on position. To release move lever back to full release position and release park brake.
