Settle an argument for me guys
1972 C10 was available with a 400 CID small block and a 402 CID big block.
Yes or no

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
No is the correct answer. 402 badged as a 400 but 402 cu in.

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
no 400 small block in a 1972 c-10.there were 2 - 6 cylinders,250 and 292.a 307 and a 350 v-8 small blocks and a 400 (402) v-8 big block.that is it as far as i remembered and looked up to be sure in my 72 chevy truck sales brochure.there were 400 small blocks from 1970 til 1980.lots in old impala wagons and monte carlo's,then a million little class "C" motorhomes with 400 small blocks but i don't remember seeing a 400 small block in a truck til 75 or 76 when they seemed to be very plentiful around here in 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks but no 400 small blocks in a 72.

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
no on the 400 sbc, it was offered only in passenger cars until somewhere around 76-77
engine option literature I believe will support that - Keith, little help here please?

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
This is correct. The 8-400 was a big block.

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
You are correct. GM spend $ on the marketing and didn't want everyone to think it was and different. The emissions requirements changed that year. The amount of pollutants was split into two categories. Under 400 CI and over 400 CI. By increasing the displacement the BBC fell into the over category and didn't require major reworking to meet the requirement. That's the reason for the displacement change.

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
My '71 had 400 badges, 402 emission label and the suffix code on the block said it was a 396.

No, a 400 sbc wasn't an option in a 67-72 truck.

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
No, 400 SBC was not available for '72 C-10's. The 402 BBC was marketed as a 400.
https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...olet-Truck.pdf The 400 small block showed up in trucks in '76 but not in 2wd trucks, only 4wd's. Then in 1980 it was dropped from the 1/2tons and offered on K20/K30's with GVW greater than 8500 lbs. 1980 was also the last year of the 400 in trucks.

Re: Settle an argument for me guys
Some very good info in this thread. I owned a 1970 shorty with the stock 402 BB, never heard of a 400 SB for those early years. As a matter of fact, I believe the floor "hump" was raised to accommodate the larger block and Turbo 400.
My 2 cents...
