Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
I'm looking at options on adding a limited slip/locker to my truck with the eaton HO52 rear that has 4:10 gears. I read about using the detroit locker from the 14 bolt FF, and the axle shafts, but are there other options that would work?
I don't want to replace the entire rear end as I rarely drive the truck. I'm in the process of replacing the brakes and I'm good with the current drum brakes and 4:10 gearing.

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
A locker is the only option far as I know no one makes a posi for eaton diff you could start scrounging junk yards asking farmers about old trucks etc looking for a 4.10 with an eaton locker.
From my understanding you could usea 14 bolt lunchbox locker and change the side gears to match the eaton splines. I have thought of doing the reverse taking my eaton locker to my 14 bolt |

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
Other than finding an original No-Slip, the Detroit with the 14 bolt shafts is the only option for the Eaton.
It really does make sense to just R&R the whole thing if you want more options and that’s easier if you have a leaf spring equipped truck which is likely if it’s a GMC. Bolt-in Dana 60’s are out there and common in 3.54 gear sets from big block trucks and if you don’t work it hard, the semi-float 14 bolt also makes a good replacement in addition to the well know full floater.

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
It’s coil springs. I just want more traction. Having an open diff with a 396, makes it interesting getting the power to the ground when playing.
What year 14 bolt lunchbox locker am I looking for? Does it have to be aftermarket or was it factory?

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
73 to 87 14 bolt not sure if ones newer would fit you can use 14 bolt axles as well or change side gears
14 bolt axles will need to be shortened |

If 14 bolt stuff works, is there a reason he couldn't use a True-trac for a 14 bolt?

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
If you look at an exploded view of the carrier for an HO axle you will see the ring gear mounts differently so you can’t swap in a different carrier. You can only swap in one that replaces guts of the stock carrier as mentioned above. Ring gear has a flange on inside of the center bore that bolts to the carrier and bolts don’t go into the back of the ring gear as you are used to seeing.

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
No to the true trac. You need to use something that fits the stock carrier. On the 14 bolt the detroit fits inside the stock carrier. The 14 bolt and ho52 use the same detroit but have different splines. The older spline count, 17 I believe, is no longer available hence the axle shaft swap.

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
I added a Detroit locker to my HO52 last month. P/N 225S-10. Had to get some 30 spline 14 bolt axle shafts.
I'd recommend finding a good way to lift/support the third member when you're messing with it. It is really heavy, ask my back ![]() |

Re: Eaton HO52 locker/LSD option
Pick up 4 long fine thread 3/8 bolts cut the heads give them a nice round grind to them they can hold the gasket in place as well as line up the 3rd member when installing it
