I just have the center dash speaker on the 78. Would I need to modify my dash to add the two corner speakers?

Yes, both my 80's era Silverados had the front corner speakers.

I think the side speakers only were offered after the dash change in ‘81. I only remember my 70’s trucks having the center speaker.

I have seen where people have turned the 1 speaker in the center, to a dual speaker. There is an older post about it.
If you do a search for dash speakers, it should pop up, along with other post about speakers. You’ll probably find a lot answers to you questions already in a thread.

I think I'm just going to install a single RetroSound Standard Stereo Speakers 4" x 10" in the center dash. I don't want to cut up my dash on the 78. This will act like two speakers and allow for stereo. It will replace the mono stock speaker still in the dash.

I just did this, center speaker only. For simplicity and cost. They're a little better than factory center speaker but don't expect to rock out.

Was the speaker a direct bolt in? I'm trying to avoid cutting up the dash in any way. What year is your truck?
