Aftermarket universal tilt install
Hey everyone I'm working on a guys 72 k5 blazer. He bought a chrome universal aftermarket tilt column. He wants me to disassemble the pot joint on the factory intermediate shaft and cut the end of the shaft off and slide it into the 3/4" double d shaft at the end of the steering column. I havent really looked into the actual fitment of these two parts. But it seems like it might work. Obviously I would drill and thru bolt the 2 pieces together. But will this work with operating angles and what not? The steering gear box end still has the factory rag joint attached to the intermediate shaft. Or does he need to bite the bullet and get a steering u joint and intermediate shaft assembly? He already has the steering column sitting there in the truck so he wont want to buy a different column.

Re: Aftermarket universal tilt install
No, that won't work for various reasons.. You need to install some sort of u-joint/adaptor to couple the 2 shafts together.. Borgenson makes a series of couplers designed just for this purpose..

Re: Aftermarket universal tilt install
Not that I doubt you rusty, but could you or someone else elaborate on why? I'd like to be able to give my friend some convincing reasons why it cant or shouldn't be done.

Re: Aftermarket universal tilt install
Thabks grumpy, I've seen the video you linked to while I researching about this idea and I agree with the video. But I will say that I planned a different route after giving it some thought. On the aftermarket column my friend has the 1" DD shaft extends from the column a fair amount. Enough to where I could drill and tap it for 2 5/16" bolts. In line with each other. Or perpendicular to each other for that matter. Similar to how the steering joint coupler is in that video you linked. I appreciate the info and will show the video to my friend and let him decide for himself how he wants to do it. I really wish my other friend hadn't even mentioned it to him to try and do it the way he wants.

Re: Aftermarket universal tilt install
Steering carries serious liability. I would not want to be part of anything that I was not 110% in agreement with myself.
