fuel priming issues
So I got to the stage of seeing if my cummins swap would run... and it did, I had the fuel lines into a jerry can just untill I got my fuel lines made. It was running then died, I thought ok ill run the new lines. Until I noticed something, the fuel filter is bone dry and nothing had been taken from the jerry can. I tried priming for about two hours last night got nowhere and after using smaller pop bottles to confirm no fuel is being drawn when I prime.
I havent removed anything in the fuel warmer and pre filter since the swap. its still the same, is there anything in there that could stop it from priming the filter? it did prime the new fuel lines, I pulled them off and sucked and they had fuel in them, it just seams like its not getting to the filter. Any ideas would be appreciated Im stumped and new to diesels. Edit: update, I pressurized the pop bottle with my compressor and it filled the fuel filter and then I was able to bleed the injectors and get it to run. But it doesnt seam to be drawing fuel from the bottle.

Re: fuel priming issues
Inside the fuel pump and above the fuel heater is a filter screen. That could be plugged. If there are any loose connections the system can draw air and loose prime. Any and all rubber line that's old should be replaced. Deteriated rubber lines can suck air before a leak will show up. These are the usual cause of hard starts in the morning..
Try unhooking the from the fump to the filter and see if tou can push fuel that way to verify the pump is working. Alot of times I fill the filer up and install but leave it a 1/4 turn loose. Then prime. Once fuel leaks out I will tighten the filter. That is usually enough to get it to run. Usually that will be rough until the injectors are bled. Once everything is running you usually don't have to replied the injectors after a filter swap. |

Re: fuel priming issues
I took the line that comes off the pump to the filter and pressed the prime button and nothing came out, tried starting with starter and no fuel still. I pulled the lines and there is fuel in them, does that mean the pump is shot?

Re: fuel priming issues
Sounds like a bad pump. You can stick your finger over the outlet and try priming to see of there is any pressure. It takes quite a few strokes to move fuel. On my ppump it used to take 100 strokes after a filter change. Radial pump on the back hoe took less. Sorry for the delay.
