Exclamation half moon eaten out of lifters???

I pulled the lifters out of my truck, because it was acting funny and now they are worn out, chewed out and some of the lobes on the cam are rounded... - I just installed a new cam like 4 months ago what the hell happened?

the latest items I have installed were roller rockers, new heads, guide plates, screw in studs, new pushrods, and the smaller 144 B&M blower.

any ideas guys?

Break in

I had the same thing happen once and the manufacturer told me it was due to improper breakin. Said i ran the engine to hard to quickly.

Hate to ask, but did you install new lifters with the new cam? And which lifters got worn? 4 mo. is an awfully fast time to wear like that, but at least in the late sixties, there was an oiling problem to the front of the cam. I had one flat-spot the front lobes on a 68 327 Camaro.

If you pulled the lifters and didn't put them back exactly where they came from, they will destroy themselves and take the cam with 'em.

Improper break and using the old lifters are the main causes for lifter failure. Rule of thumb: new lifters with new cam. Did you use cam lube when you put it together? I have seen guys use regular motor oil for break in lube and there cams fail.
I hope you get it fixed.

I used a crane 272 kit with brand new lifters and used the lube included. I think it was because the rockers might have been out of adjustment.. I have had a bad time with crane lifters seizing before so now I used a comp cam extreme energy 268h and the blower seems to like this one alot better.

I have used two of the crane 272 kits and never had luck with them. I had the motors professionally built and the cams went falt within a month. Luckily Crane warrantied the cam after threatening a law suit. The second cam lasted a little longer. I think they said they had a problem with the mold at that time. I'm running a comp xtreme energy 294 in a different motor and love it. It has been the best cam I have ever ran.

Your cam might have gone flat because the valves were not set correctly.

That's the same cam that I run with my 6:71 blower. I wore a couple of lobes on mine once, don't know why. I adjust all rockers and break in all cams the same way. I also soak lifters in a can of oil before installing.
