Thinking about New Cam and Heads from Texas Speed. Anybody use them, how’s there products. Prices don’t look to bad. What to get 500 hp out of my LS1

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

Nothing against Texas Speed, but BTR seems to be able to get the most out of their cams. My bone stock LS3 with nothing but their Stage 4 cam, new lifters, and headers put out just under 570 crank HP when we factored in a 13% parasitic loss.

Getting 500 crank hp is pretty doable, but 500 rwhp probably isn't going to happen without heads, intake, and a host of other mods.

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

I've used TS cams with good success. Also their VVT delete kits and again they worked well.
Haven't used the BTR stuff but they get good reviews over at LS1tech.com

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

Who is BTR. I like options and TS does Not ship to Ca so I’d have to ship to my buddies house in Nevada, no problem. 500 @ Crank is what I’m looking for. My LS1 was out of a 2002 Firebird WS6. I need to look up specs to see what the compression ratio is. Need to figure out what I need for Heads and Cam. Then a good tune
Stock Engine runs Fantastic and is a lot of Fun with the 6 Speed manual. BUT my son just built a killer SB so Game On

As stated above, Brian Tooley Racing. If you look a their stage 3 LS1/2 cam, they are saying 450 rwhp. That is a bit better than 500 crank hp and they do not mention cylinder heads. The stage 4 cam is stating over 460 rwhp and they are stating you need heads.

A good intake (FAST), some good headers and some other mods and I think you will hit your goal pretty easily.

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

I am using the Brian Tooley Racing Stage II Truck camshaft in my LS1 .
On the Dyno I had 355 RWHP. Using shortie headers and an LS6 intake.
I just broke into the 400hp at the crankshaft.
My Camshaft (SPECS: 212/218 .553”/.553” 111)
Fairly mild cam but it works perfect in my book.

To achieve 96 more hp i.e. 450HP is another step steep into the pocket book.
Higher compression
CNC heads
Long tube headers
Intake manifold.
Injectors.
You can get there but it will not be inexpensive.

Cheers

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

If I recall correctly, the Texas Speed guys cut their teeth with the C5 Vettes. I've been seriously looking into doing a LS swap myself. The TS guys seem to have a good variety of options. Their website is way better than BTR's. If you compare cams it's kind of an apples to oranges. The TS cams seem do more with duration and lift, whereas BTR do more with overlap. To each their own I guess.

If you 're looking for 500hp, you may have to do some head porting to get what you want.

Anyhow, best of luck.

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

Both BTR and Texas Speed are top notch companies to deal with and very knowledgeable and respected in the LS world. I would send your heads off to get some port work done, Texas Speed will do them in house for you, my brother sent his in to them. Summit Racing has some killer cam combos as well. A lot of guys use them with great success over on LS1 Tech. For your 500 goal you'll definitely want the heads worked and a cam, your engine should have the LS6 intake so you're fine there, long tube headers and a good tune should get you there. No need to upgrade intakes unless you are going max effort then you'll be looking for a F.A.S.T intake and throttle body.

I like your idea but don’t know anything about Turbos. Suggestions on where to start??

I would search YouTube for Sloppy Mechanic.

Matt is the king of no nonsense low buck turbo knowledge and did a series called the dont bs me build where he gives a detailed step bus step of what you need to do to get 500rwhp.

You can buy the ‘kit’ from VS racing for around a $1000.

This is the route I am going on my build.

First step is to get it running and driving NA to iron out the bugs, plus learn how to use HP tuners, and then add the turbo.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...EliGdvmbu52vYq

https://turbo4less.com/product-categ...urbo-packages/

I have gone with a set of turbo manifolds, there are lots to choose from but look up Will Barnes on FB as he does a nice set for around $250 - I got mine from eBay and they are not the best but will do.

Didn’t decap my injectors, went with the snake eater Bosch ones, you will hear a lot of bad comments about them but the group I belong too have had no problems at all so, pay your money and take your choice!

If you look up the sloppy mechanics tune cabinet there are lots of other peoples base tunes in there you can use, I am not at that stage yet but good to know there are lots of others out there with the same sort of combo.

As for a cam, not made a decision yet. The BTR Truck Norris cam looks good plus it can use the stock springs, or a Sloppy Best cam are the two I am considering. Might come down to availability and price when I get to that stage….

Anyway, it might not be for you but that is where I have got a lot of info from and the confidence to give it a try.

I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?

What ever route you decide to pursue enjoy!

P.

I am a bit confused. You said for $1000, he can have 500 rwhp, but then you mention a cam, lifters, injectors, HP Tuners, and manifolds. So at the end of the day, how much will you have total in the set-up? He isn't going to get 500 rwhp for $1000 from all the items you mentioned. A cam alone is roughly $400.

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

You don't need a cam to turbo a engine.
You can easily get 500hp with just the turbo.
The turbo doesn't change the power band.
It just ups the HP throughout the what ever band the motor runs at.

I am skeptical about the costs to install a turbo.
The costs really depends on your skill and fab abilities.
It's the things not mentioned, like pulling the motor apart to gap the rings.
Head gaskets and new bolts are required plus the while I am here stuff.
And installing a oil breather that seems to be left out of the equation.
Cheers

I did not sayi he needs a cam. I am saying Paul Y is saying $1000, yet he goes on to list $4000 worth of parts he is adding. The cheapest package on there is $868. That does not include the manifolds/headers, tuning, exhaust system, fuel pump upgrade, injectors, and any other items you may need. You are not going to spend $1000 and have everything you need to make it drivable.

Re: Anybody use any Texas Speed Stuff

Ok.

A can of worms has been opened I see.

Let’s break down the $1000 turbo set up.

eBay gt45 - $150

De capped injectors - free - if you want to get them flowed $200?

Turbo manifold - use the truck ones and a T4 flange $12

PCM Hammer for Tuning - Free

OBD MX+ dongle $120

Walbro 450 pump - $100

Sloppy Best Cam - import version $250

PAC 1218 springs $70

Re used head bolts and head gaskets

Maxspeedingrod intercooler and piping $150

Miscellaneous fuel fittings, pipe etc $100

Looks like you are correct -can’t do it for $1000, would need $1152.

My apologies….

Would I do it like this? No

Can you do it like this and make 500rwhp? Yes. If you have the fabrication skills.

Let’s consider it a conversation piece.

When doing my LS swap I made sure that everything I purchased was up to the intended power level I would eventually be looking to achieve.

I needed to run new fuel lines, get a fuel pump, needed new injectors so just purchased what was needed for 600rwhp rather than what I needed for a 300rwhp na set up.

Once I have ironed out the bugs NA will buy the pieces to make the turbo truck happen. Will I do it on the super cheap?

No.

Anyway, sorry for the thread hijack! Do a little research and enjoy which ever route you decide to take.

Oh..you are building a junkyard engine. I thought you were building a real engine that would actually last and was dependable. My mistake. Continue on.
