Correct Motor Mounts 1968
Having an issue with some new motor mounts. The power steering bracket attaches to the lower stud as shown below. The new mount's bolt is surrounded by rubber and steel which is now interfering with the bracket.
I've looking all over and I haven't found one mount that is like what I assume was the original one. I did a search and didn't find anyone else with a similar problem. I suppose I could try to install bracket under the motor mount or even trim the rubber and structure around the bottom hole, but. I'd rather not do that. Any ideas?

Re: Correct Motor Mounts 1968
You need a later model mount out of a car. The engine has been replaced. That bracketry is for a long water pump
EDIT: try a mid 70s caprice or monte carlo, I don't know exactly which car Last edited by kwmech; 12-24-2023 at 01:01 PM. |

Yes you had the original mounts still on the motor. Those were prone to seperate and they updated them later to the new style you have now. When they did they made the power steering bracket longer and it mounted underneath the mount with 3 tabs. Im not sure if this was a recall or just an update. Those motor mounts breaking were the reason they made the engine strap kit. Updated bracket Looks like this

Re: Correct Motor Mounts 1968
Interesting... These new mounts look no better, IMO, than the original. They don't have the interlocking tabs that I am familiar with.
Since the new engine is a 383 with an 8" balancer I discovered that the front bracket also won't mount to the front of the block as it hits the balancer now. I ordered brackets for a 67-68 Z/28 since they had an 8" balancer. I'm hoping it will at least solve that problem. I'll have to see how it interacts with the motor mount. Maybe I can mount the new two-hole bracket under the motor mount with a washer under the third hole.

Re: Correct Motor Mounts 1968
The power steering mounts on my 68 look nothing like those. I thought mine were stock but maybe not. I too am putting in a 383 with an 8-inch damper and was worried that I would have the same issue. I went to the shop and saw that the old engine had an 8-inch on it already with the stock type motor mounts but the power steering brackets look nothing like the OP. Mine are a large cast iron mounted to the block and a secondary mounted to the back of the pump. Both mount on top of the motor mount.

Re: Correct Motor Mounts 1968
Very different! I'm gonna guess since you have an 8" balancer then that bracket was sourced from some other application to work with that size balancer.
I would also guess that no 68 trucks came with anything bigger than a 6 3/4" balancer. Do you have a short or long water pump?

Re: Correct Motor Mounts 1968
Short pump. I put on that balancer about 4 years ago. It was larger than what was on it but worked and went with it.
