Needs new antenna
1972 GMC CUSTOM 1500
I'm wanting to replace my old antenna with a new one. How do I remove this one? So far only thing I can find is talking about upper mounted antenna. Thank you, Keith |

Re: Needs new antenna
Best I remember that size has a nut on the back side.
Some had a Phillips screw in the front on the bigger sizes once you removed the mast. You will find out when you drop that wheel well. If you have an Inspection camera, You will see a nut on the back side of the antenna.

Re: Needs new antenna
That must have been mounted for a camper rig.
Usually you can pull off the wipers then unbolt the Cowl to get to the back of the AM/FM Antenna. With a Camper Mount, you gotta get behind the fender skirt.

Re: Needs new antenna
The person I bought truck from 35 years ago had his own electric company so he probably pulled a lot of different trailers...I guess reason for the side mount antenna. I don't know if he special ordered or if GMC had some from factory with the side mount.
Anyways... I'm thinking maybe buying a white antenna to match wheels, roof, and bumpers. Does anyone know where this particular antenna can be bought? In my minimum search so far I have not came across any. Thanks, Keith where can I get |

Re: Needs new antenna
I'm guessing a PO had a full size camper with a berth over the cab, hence the side antenna mount. Alternatively, a Ladder/Pipe Rack [''Headache Rack.''] might also conflict with the usual Passenger Side Cowl mount.
Does Crutchfield still sell old school AM/FM antennas? Truck stops often have a lot of Outdated comm gear, like CB accessories. OK. I just checked their online catalog. They sell some hidden antennas. I won't recommend them. They do have a 16'' Marine antenna [Rubber Duckie style] p/n: 070MANT16B....$24.99. Includes a 54'' coax cable. But then a 16'' Rubber Duckie might not even clear over the hood, and deflect signal from the driver's side. IDK.

Re: Needs new antenna
Given your truck was originally radio delete with no hole in the cowl (side mount not an original GM option, this was added by a PO at some point) - those cowls are sometimes popular sale items on the parts board (sometimes..). Faded Ochre cowls with the antenna hole are pretty common - have you considered buying one and selling yours and just mounting a factory antenna? That leaves you with holes on the fender, so I understand if that's not desired.
Personal opinion only, but since you mentioned, I'd think a white antenna would look very "modern" on this nice old truck - and that nobody would notice whether it happened to also be the same color as the wheels. Again, personal opinion only (and we all know what that and 5 cents will get me) - but I'd stick with a metal antenna from the era of the truck. Have you tried CB suppliers? They may have some options. Here are a couple of options you might consider and a few CB and general radio suppliers listed at the bottom. Similar spring-whip mount ebay (might be able to mount with single mount vice the two provided) Amazon (probably require 1 additional stabilizing hole to be drilled) Option cb world Walcott Radio |
