Question About Power Steering Gear Boxes - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm wanting to put power steering on a 68 GMC that did'nt come with it originally and my frame is not notched out for the gear box like a frame with power steering. I'm wondering can I use a box from a different year and not modify the frame or will I have to modify my frame to make any power steering gear box work? Thanks for the reply.

Your frame should be indented, they are not notched. I haven't ever seen a 68 that wasn't. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

My frame is not indented for a power steering gearbox. I went to the junkyard today and found one that had power steering and my frame is different. Mine is straight along the outside edge of the frame where the p/s frame had the indention. Both trucks are 2 wd. Wes I noticed on your web page you modified your frame on your panel for the same reason. Was that for that particular gearbox you used or because you was changing it to power steering?

I've heard of a few folks with unindended 68 frames. The earlier style ram power steering was offered on the 68's. I wonder if they didn't make the transition to gear box PS later in the year. My 68 (Manufactured around summer '68?) had the indents when I put one on a few years back.

P.S. You will have to put a small notch in your front D.S. bumper bracket though.

To the best of my knowledge, early 68's did not have the indent and late 68's did. I know for a fact my 67 was not indented and I'm using a p/s box off of a 77. Instead of modifying the frame, I simply built 1/2" spacers to stand the box away from the frame for each bolt. I have been running this setup for 2 years next month without any problems.

I had a 66 and we used pipe for spacers also. The bump steer was off because I didn't spend enough time getting everything perfect but it will work.

On my 67 it does not have a indention. I just notched it out.

1967 and early 68 4x4 models did not have an indentation in the frame. I will be adding P/S to my truck in the near future. I plan to indent the frame. Adding shims without indenting the frame will cause a misalignment. This might not be a problem, but it would be better to be properly aligned. GMCPaul sells a spacer kit.

I just last year converted a 68 C10 from standard to power steering. I didn't have a problem with the gearbox but did have to get a draglink (Centerlink) as some say, also the rag joint. Everything came from a 71 donor truck. Once you convert it you will be glad you did.

Thanks for all the replys. I'll probably just use spacer then becaused I've already painted my frame with POR 15.
