I turned my 327 into a 286... and I didn't even know! =)
Lately I noticed that the engine was having a bit of a stumbling problem, when I was racing up the street and I shifted into 2nd gear, the engine would stutter around 4000 RPM. I thought maybe it was some dirt in the fuel filter; no big deal. Only happened a couple of times, and always when I shifted from 1st to 2nd. Normal driving seemed fine. In fact, with my heavy foot, I didn't even notice any loss of power, really.
So today I popped the hood to check the oil (because I forgot to add some last time it was low) and was looking over things. Hmm, I thought maybe I should take off the air cleaner and check out the ol' Quad. What a beauty... WHOA! HELLO! One of my plug wires is off and just resting on top of the distributor. Ok, so now I better plug it back in, check all the other wire connections, and pull and replace the fouled non-firing plug. Hmm, maybe now would be a good time to switch to HEI ![]() |

The other morning my truck was missing so I go to check my wires at a gas station parking lot in the dark and found fairly easily when my finger went in the pllug on the distributor with the truck running! It zapped me three times before I could get my finger out!

I once pulled a plug wire off my running HEI-equipped truck for some reason...the spark jumped right to my finger. DAMN!!! That hurt!

![]() I figured with the one cylinder not firing, it made my engine a 286 ![]() 327 / 8 = 40.875 40.875 * 7 = 286.125 Funny, it seemed like it had a decent amount of power. |

Years ago(mid 70's) I didn't have a ride, so I thumbed it to the girlfriends house every other day, About thirty miles, in the boonies. Every time I saw the same 57 Chevy Hardtop, and it would Never stop to give a kid a lift. Well A couple of months later, I had bought a car, and was on a back road on the way to the girlfriends, Low and behold this 57 was pulled over to the side and his hood was up... I stopped and talked to the guy, He had no Idea what was wrong !!! I asked if he remembered me from my thumb, He said yea, and he never picked up Hitchers, I told him that was too bad and I hoped he found someone that would, because I could tell him what was wrong with his car but wasn't going to... Yep, His coil wire had worked it's way out. The next day, I seen it on a tow truck..

Damn points caps aren't worth 2 cents. I'm going to upgrade to a points style with the hei terminals and get a more positive feel when changing wires. I've had mine come loose a couple times.

WOW! It sure sounds alot better now that I plugged that wire back in. I noticed there was an old spiders web inside the boot; it must have been disconnected for a long time! Performance increased too, now that it's firing all eight cylinders
