tranny shift points.
after i get the engine in and running, i'll need to change the shift points on the tranny.
the way it is now, it shifts to the next gear at 4500 rpm's. the new engine should make peak power around 6200 rpm's. so i need to have it shift around 6300 or so. how do i change it? |

I can't remember if you have a 350 or 700R4? Anyway, for a 700, it's a matter of working on the governor. Not hard to do, but time consuming. You have to pull the governor and change weights and springs. No set rule here. Every engine/vehicle combo is different. It's a experiment to you get it right thing. I bought a kit for mine and changed raised it to 5500 rpm. If I were you, I'd not worry about auto rpm points too much. Just do as I did and get a floor shifter and do it manually. This way, you can change it whenever you feel like it. Of course a shift light comes in real handy doing this.

TH350's can also be adjusted by changing the governor springs / weights. I agree with Swervin, floor shifter may be the way to go if you don't feel comfortable messing with the tranny. But it's not hard, on a th350 you can do the whole spring swap in about 10 minutes.

you can buy governor kits for this. It comes with an assortment of springs and weights. It will have a chart with an estimated shift rpm for different combinations. But, this is not prove positive. You change them, put it back in and test drive. If by some amazing chance it's where you like it, call it quits. But I bet money, it will take several attempts to get it right. I pulled my governor probably 8 times before I got it to where I wanted it. Every vehicle, rear gear, tire, converter and engine combination will be different. A tip. Jack the truck up on the side the governor is on. This will keep any fluid from pouring out. This is not a fun project. As a matter of fact, I rather hated doing it. Really gripes you to have to go back and pull the governor again. It gets old really quick. |

Crawl under the truck, find the governor cover (has a bail like you're master cylinder and is on the drivers side just foreward of the extension housing) take off the bail, gently pry off the cover, and remove the governor. Remenber to keep everything very clean. May want to wash the tranny off in this area before starting. TCI sells the kits as do other popular tranny places.

I used a kit made by Superior. I did a search and couldn't find it anywhere on the net. Anyway, B&M makes a kit and Summit sells it. Go to Summit and do a search for BMM-20248. It's $28.95. |

Couldn't you just manually shift it at 6300 rpm?
