Question Lifts

Question; how much lift is too much in you're opinion?

If you are not doing it for offroad reasons, it's all opinion. I personally think that a nicely done, only nice day cruiser, should have as much lift as can be afforded, and then some.
I have always loved the philosophy of Go Big or Go Home!

When it comes to usability for offroad, it then depends on what you are doing: mud, deep water crossings, rocks, trails, etc.

Everyone has a personal opinion but I like to strike awe into peoples minds so they think, wow, that thing is huge. Kinda like how Bigfoot started.

If it's 2 wheel drive, put it on the ground, if it's 4 wheel drive, put it in the sky.

I agree with GreenMystChevy. I lifted mine as high as i could afford and then borrowed money to go a little higher.

IMO

Since this is all opinion, I'll chime in....4 to 6 inches max with up to 35s for a driver with decent off road capability. 2 to 4 inches and a sawzall if you want a rockcrawler and then pop on some 40s! Any taller on the street and you'd be compensating for something else.

Seriously, just stay practical! Decide what you'll use it for most and gear your lift and tires to those needs. You don't want to be running a 8" lift and 38s if you're driving to work everyday. Don't forget the money you'll have to put into gears with bigger tires also!

main thing

It all depends if you want to park in a garage, a parking ramp, or go under over passes on the freeway! And if you can drive, so you don't roll it over, otherwise the sky is the limit. Just don't jacker up and leave dinky tires on (looks dumb)

6-8 would be my choice for a daily driver with 35 or 38 tall tire's..

personally for a driver or never see anything but black top, 2 inch MAX, maybe a leveler kit for the front, but if your gonna use it, build it for what your doing... i cant stand lifted 4x4s if they dont see mud, thats what that front axle was put there for IMO

leaf spring easy lifts

How do you lift yours?
Is there an easy trick thats cheap for the leafs? I know I'd buy new proper length shocks, I want to go whatever gets me to 33" tires or so, about 4" lift then? Should I do a body lift, what combo do you use? Thanks

Try this chart. It should help you out. You have the right idea though, choose the tire size you want and then lift the truck to accomidate them.
I am running 35x12.5's with 4'' susp lift and 3'' body lift and have enough room to clear 37's without any other modifications.
If you want to go cheap and do not plan on doing a lot of offroading, you could use blocks to lift it. They sell them at most parts houses. I do not recomend this if it is going to be used off road often. I would buy a full susp kit with new springs from one of the big manufactures like Superlift or Skyjacker There are a few others out there, just do some shopping and ask people what they have and how they like it.
I hope I helped?

i think 8 inches is about as far as it can go and still look good. when your truck starts to go into the realm of not even having tires in the wheelwells cuz you are lifted so high and the tires are so big, I don't think it looks too good. However, I know you need this kind of clearance for some kinds of offroading. This may make me sound like a pavement pounder, but i like a good compromise of looks & performance. I want to eventually get 6" all spring lift and use 35's. Heck, when my truck ran, I would still wheel it where I could with open diffs, stock ride height, and 32" tires.

As far as lifting trucks just for show, I don't know if I necessarily agree with that. However, lifting 2wd trucks is (IMO) one of the dumbest things someone can do.

lift

i put a 4" rancho lift, big o big foot at's 33" looks real tough but sure wish i would have spent the money and did a 6" lift and 35" tires, i think this summer i will take my front springs off and take the press to them and make 5 or 6" of lift leave the 4" blocks on the rear and have the rear springs arched 2", already have done the longer braided brake lines to accomidate 6" lift. done the raised steering arm, anyways my opinion the 67 to 72 look bad ass with 4" or 6" i like 6, dont forget to get some nerf bars so you can get in without a ladder. hope this helped

I had 325/60R15s on 15x10s that rubbed a little on my 70. I installed a 2" tuff country HD springs up front and a 2" block w/ add-a-leaf in the rear. I actually ended up with about 3" in front. I now have 33s on 15x10s and no clerance issues.
Will be installing a 4" rough country lift on the 71 here soon.

i like the 2" lift with 33s on my '85...it can still fit in parking garages and under low hanging branches but has enough ground clearance to clear hurdles.

I started with an 83 3/4 ton with 4" lift and 33", then went to a 92 K1500 with 6" lift and 35". Now they both seem real tiny, then were big for a while. I want to go stupid big now. 10-5" lift and 44". Probaly 10" with a little fender hacking, big but with a low center of gravity. Just remember wide tires; not only do narrow tires look funny, but they are un-safe. You need a good base. As modifications, remember you might have to hack fenders, over 8" of lift need crossover steering, and I would say a 33" tires on solid axle and 35" tires on IFS need steering stab. or else you will be wondering all over the road. Just my 2 cents!
