performance qjet rebuild

okay, i'm finally THINKING about using my qjet on my new engine.

it is in a serious need of a rebuild. what all will i need to get to have it perform the way i want it to.

i have NEVER worked on a carb before(other then turning some screws here and there) so you gotta tell me exactly what i need and what i need to do to get my old one off my 305 to run good on my new engine

From what I hear it isn't too tough, but I wouldn't know as I haven't attempted it yet...

I'm planning on doing the same with my engine though, running a stock q-jet on the engine.

I just did mine, first one I ever did, it wasnt to bad. I disasembled it on a cookie pan so that when things like springs fell out they didnt roll away. when I took the parts off one by one I put the on a white peice of paper and wrote the part no beside it (when you buy the rebuilt kit they give you an expoloded diagrame with every part #'d) that way I knew what ever part was and where it went back in. I recommend buying the dip cleaner. I bought the gunk brand hydroseal II, I cleaned the carb before hand with wd40 then brake cleaner, and scrapped all old gasket off, it looked pretty damn clean, I put the carb in peices into a pot, dumped 4L of hydroseal ($28cdn) into the pot (clear liquid) and next day the liquid was black, the carb came out looking brand new, it was amazing, it took every bit of everything off, cant recommend it enough, well worth it.

Eric,

Get yourself Doug Roe's Rochestor Carb book. He does a good job of explaining each function of the parts in a carb and how to tune it for high performance. He has some great cross-sectioned pics in there so you can see what's going on as you read.

throw that QJet in the trash, and get one from an older model that is fully adjustable, and free of all that smog crap. or buy a 1904.

If you don't to do it yourself I would recommend JET Performance in Cali. They did a rebuild for me a few years back on a early 80s Q-jet. It was the difference between night and day. They will rebuild yours or sell you a rebuilt one.

They tune the carb to your truck's specs, bush the throttle shafts, epoxy the well plugs, and some of the other tricks mentioned in the Doug Roe book.

They weren't cheap, but compared to the cost of a new carb it was reasonable. The best part is they eliminated the stumble most 80's Q-jets seem to have. Nothing like the sound of a Q-jet when the secondaries open up.

i got mine tuned on my 305 so that it ran great. it just got really crappy gas milage(around 8mpg)

I had cdn tire order a kit in for me, nehoff I think. $25 or something like that. only spring they give you is the accel pump spring, was surprised by that, I figured the kit would have replacement springs for everything. no replacement needles or anything, I think thats normal though that their not included.

Im from chilliwack bc btw, been out to alberta a few times, I got family in calgary and edmonton. nice country out there.
