original tires

Is there a market for original tires? I have four 17" split rims with original tires on them, off a 68 4x4. They are not in bad shape. Make a great set for a museum piece, etc.

Talking

Split rims are generally illegal in a lot of states because they are really dangerous. If they were mine I would find a way to safely let the air out and scrap them.

Yeah....by all means throw away a peice of history. That makes perfect sense. I truly believe that someday there will be no idea how these trucks were ever assembled(unless that day is already here). Everyone will think all these trucks came with chrome wheels, valve covers, and air cleaners. I am not against what you do to cut up and butcher your own truck, but I am against throwing away any original part. If you don't want them that is fine. Find somebody who does.

By the way: Can anybody tell me where I can find the correct size dual line white stripe bias ply tires for my 1971 Chevrolet Cheyenne Super 10? I am also looking for a set of REALLY nice 15X6 5 lug wheels with no curb rash or wollered out bolt holes.

I think that people may remember these trucks originally came with splits instead of chrome wheels because of all the people that have been killed changing tires on them. Sometimes you need to draw the line between "original" and "dangerous."
And changing wheels is hardly "butchering" a truck. Now hacking a dash for a DIN radio, or converting a LWB to SWB...thats a different story. But changing wheels is like changing socks, if you don't like em then you get a new pair.

Oh, and I challenge you to find someone who wants a set of split rims (other than for scrap $$$).

That having been said, I still have splits on my truck and bias ply tube tires. The bias ply tires are tanks! I really want those splits gone, but money doesn't grow on trees.

Listen to JimKshortstep4X4...he knows what he's talking about, split rims should not be kept. The chance of someone not knowing what they have and killing themselves or their family member makes them a MENACE.
