72 3/4 ton 4x4 trans cross member
Did the 72 4x4's have a different style trans cross member than the previous years? I noticed that mine is more of an layed over L shape. |____

Here is a picture of my trans/transfer case cross member off of my 72 3/4 ton 4x4. It looks a lot different than other’s I've seen. Is this the correct one? Anyone else have this type because I have some questions?

The 3/4 ton cross members that I have seen are like the 1/2 ton cross members. I have never seen one like the picture.

I might have posted some in another thread, let me find the link.
edit: Can't make anything out in the link. I have some pics at home and I'll try and take some of my 71 this evening.

I had this one on my computer from my 71 K20. I could take some better ones if needed.

Cool thanks.
Has anyone ever seen the one I have before? I'm wondering if I need to replace it or not, the lower 4 holes on each side line up just fine, but the two holes on the left side piece going up don't? And what you see is all there is to it, no more pieces. I wonder if it ever came with the 72's or not?

I have the same one as dean for my 3/4 ton 4X4, I've seen the one you pictured under a 78 blazer and a 203 transfer case, but don't know if it's the stock one.

I think that L shaped crossmember is off a mid to upper 70's truck, my 72 has the other style, like in the picture. Although the newer style is easier to remove if your dropping the transfer and transmission together!

I would replace the one you have with one like Dean's picture. It will be much stronger as it picks up both channels of the frame rails.
I suspect that it is not the right one. Jim |

I had a 71 and a 72 that looked like the one you have. One was in a 3/4 4x4 and one in a K5. I also owned one that looked like Deans.

Now this is getting confusing. So there is a chance this is original? Anyone else have one, or seen one?

Like I posted, ive had both types. They were on trucks that were orig and from known orig owners. I would say that GM must have used 2 types for some reason. i would think that there may have been more than one plant back in those days. I know for a fact that the K5 was all orig and had the orig 350 turbo/205 tc.. The 72 3/4 4x4 was owned since new and the only trans work was a rebuild in the 2nd year (74) and a shift kit installed. No crossmember was ever changed. That would tell me that they must have had two types available. I know that Ive seen this happen with newer trucks, mid year changes. Also, the 72 was the last year of this body. It may be that the trans crossmember that is also used on the 73 and up truck, also got used on the last trucks built in 72. It also looks like the one in a 76 4x4 I had. I would say, in my opinion, its orig and stock.

Learn something new every day. This is turning out to be pretty interesting! Does anyone have a picture of the one I have mounted under the vehicle?
