aftermarket fuel injection kits??
ive been playing w/ the idea of dumping my carb for an aftrmkt fuel injection system. good or bad idea? how much does something like that cost? what kind of a hassle is it??

I personally like the idea. But this might scare you off. You are looking at anywhere from $1500 - $3000 for a setup

yeah, youre right. its gonna scare me off. someone suggested going and pulling a setup out of a junkyard but im not too keen on that. i need to replace my carb....any suggestions?

My only suggestion would be a Quadrajet. Especially for a 4x4 application.

I used a Tubro City one on mine. Two years and no problems and it was well worth it.

Tuebo City is really expensive IMO. Their stuff is a compilation of modified stock GM stuff. The TB's are bored, throttle plates are cheap from sources like brasswell and if you look around you can have a TB bored for a relativly low cost. The thinning of the throttle shaft is easily done with a die grinder.
As for the ECU they use, it's a 1227747 ECU from TBI systems and it's a very common ECM that has been hacked so the source code is available and you can tune it pretty easily by burning proms. You could also ditch the prom for a flash ROM board and do on the fly tuning, even with a dipswitch for multiple settings (multiple bin files = calibartions) for instance performance, mileage, valet... and so on. Check out my buddy Bill HitchCocks stuff: http://www.misterbill.homeip.net and check out his prominator board. That thing ROCKS and converts your 7747 (or any other PROM based GM ECU, even the 1228746 camaro ECM with improved control due to a MAT sensor and a lean cruise feature) to a full blown tunable ECU. |

I got my TPI sys. from street & preformance and i gave 2k for it in late '89. and it's a great set up.
As far as how much hastle you will have a little more work to do since your truck is a '85 you will need an in tank fuel pump or a frame mounted one that will support the EFI system. Wireing isn't too bad most systems have everything marked and it's a stright foreward hook up. |

I'm running an Edelbrock MPFI and so far everything works great.
I can see why most people would shy away from EFI. First cost. I got a killer deal on my system. $900! (New is around $1600.) Then there is the wiring the fuel system the programming etc. I have to say, it’s very nice to be able to jump in the old truck on a cold day and fire her up with just a quick bump of the key. And soon it will be remote start! (came with the alarm system I have) Here is a picture (not a very good one) of the motor. |

I've been using a Holley ProJection 2D for a while. The system isn't very well regarded, and I find it somewhat limited in what it will do, but overall I like it. Throttle response is WAY better than a carb, starts first time, and better mileage.
If you want a GM TPI, try www.customefis.com. I've heard good things about him (but never tried it myself). Brian |

If I remember correctly, summit had the edelbrock MPFI's for around $1600 a few years back. I'm not sure what they cost now.
Edelbrock now makes a Pro-Flo MPFI system for the Vortec heads. The part number is #3507. If I had to do it all over again I think I would go with the Holley Stealth Ram. It's around $2300. But cool lookin! |
