tar removal ... is it even worth trying ??? pics

drove down a road i shouldn't of yesterday .... undercoated my inner fenders pretty well .... little bit on the tires

how would go about removing it from the paint ??? any thought ....

1st thing i thought was a pressure washer with hot water ... might just smear it

I always use WD40, it takes quite a while, but I have had good luck and no paint damage

just spray it on the tar directly, let it set for a minute to soak in, wipe off, have plenty of rags. It will take off just a bit a time, but has always worked for me.

I grew up on a dirt road. To keep the giant dust clounds down in the summers the County would lay down a skim coat of tar. Got on my truck, my dad's truck, my mom's car...etc... We drove as slow as possible until the stuff was dry (usually took a good 2 days) but it still got on our vehicles. We've always used kerosene to take it off. Did it for years with no paint damage, but just in case, I'd apply it in a small spot first to see what it does.

I had 2000 miles on my 05 silverado and ran through some of that stuff. it was a 4 hour experience getting it off my truck. I used some stuff in a purple bottle some kind of bug and tar remover safe for clear coat and paint. it worked well. good luck

i used my high pressure pressure washer to take the under coat off my 64 and there was no paint damage

I've always used the GO-JO in the small can. Works great. Just apply and let sit for a couple hours then wash it off. I was told this method by the road construction guys when I got it on my truck.

Kerosene has always been the way to go. Should contact the county/municipality and thank them for the free undercoating too

I agree with Kerosene. Gets it the tar right off... then wax. Never had a problem.

Kerosene for me too, I have tried mineral spirits too, it works, but if you have a lot to remove, kerosene is a lot faster, works great taking off old undercoating from frame or cab also.

You might want to try Diesel first. It is about half the price of Kero. If you have an oil jobber close,you can go buy off road(dyed) diesel & that way you don't have to pay highway taxes.($.50 a gal in Wash.) Just my 2 bits.

I would try the diesel first, alot easier to get. Also, I know aluminum wheel polish works, but takes more elbow grease.

I know I'll get the no, No, NO responses...but I've had the best luck with gasoline. I know it's a Bad Thing to use gas as a solvent...but the last time I did this it was the only thing I could find that would get it off with minimum scrubbing. I just took a shop rag pretty well soaked and gently rubbed until gone. Do ONLY in a very well-ventilated area for obvious reasons.

Diesel for me , that's what they use to keep the paving machines clean . Well the working parts anyway .

Same here. I used to drive through it daily in const work and gas was the only way to do it quickly. Bad idea if you smoke.

I have a can of Goop that I leave around with the lid off and a rag over the top to keep bugs out. After a while the white Goop turns to a yellow/green mucus looking stuff. I have sprayed it on with a pump sprayer and it worked great. Great for engine degreaser too and no chance of fire.
When I worked at a car lot in 1975, they had 55 gallon barrels of stuff that looked just like this and that is where I got the idea later on. We would spray it on and let sit for about 30 minutes and hose off.
When the water hits it, it turns white and when the water is clear again, the stuff is gone.
