Big Mystery Bummer...while we were in NY!

So my wife and I set off for NY last Wed. for her family picnic that was in Buffulo, NY, Evangola State Park. We returned last night to find this! I had turned off the water in the house so it wasn't any running water or valve bust/breaking in the house....All we can figure out... that it had to be rain and a leak in the roof. The drywall that came down was over the bed of my 71' ,all the carpet is ruined in our bedroom and walk in closet, heated tile floor is soaked and ruined and Lil' Red suffered a small ding on her bed rail when the drywall came down, Lil' Red's cover got ripped. The garage and bedroom are in sad shape. Ins. claims adjuster is calling today. Just a bummer!

At least it didn't come down on top of the cab! That really sucks. I park my truck under a couple trees at my uncles house (that's where he wants it) and I'm terrified that one of them dead lookin trees is gonna come down on 'er.

Re: Big Mystery Bummer...while we were in NY!

Just another hurdle I figure. Yes, it totally sucks and I appreciate everyones kind words. Getting home, tired, and walking into the mess that I saw was really a sorry way to come home. Truck is damaged on drivers bed rail...it's easy to pic out because there is no marks or dents anywhere...or I should say..... there "WAS" no marks or dents anywhere. Ins. is supposed to call today.

Re: Big Mystery Bummer...while we were in NY!

Damn dude!! Remember the story of my insurance company and the 68.....beat on them till you get what is fair. You know they will try to low-ball you if at all possible. Figure out what materials are going to cost to fix EVERYTHING (house AND Lil' Red), then add labor to that. If they are below that, don't accept until they are at or above!

No I did not turn off the hot water heater, but how could that flood the upstairs master bedroom/bathroom? The water heater is in the basement. I was thinking maybe the sewers flooded and the water came up through the toilets...but that would have flooded the main level toilets first...not the upstairs toilet???? The main water was OFF at the valve in the basement entry from the street. I went up in the attic expecting to see where the water had come in maybe from a torential rain...but there are no signs as it is dry up there??? I really am baffled on this one???

Re: Big Mystery Bummer...while we were in NY!

If you have an expansion tank in your system (usually on the hot water side if you have hydronic heating) that may have sufficient volume to create a leak with the water turned off. What heats your heated floor?

Re: Big Mystery Bummer...while we were in NY!

Sorry to here about the misfortune. Did you leave the air conditioner on while you were gone, if the drain pan in the attic is clogged or drain came unhooked i've seen stuff like that here in Texas.
