I am 17 and need a little so called guidance

Hi Guys,
I am new to the forum and i am going to have a few questions. I have a 1968 chevy c 10 stepside which untill this weekend has a 6-cyl with a granny 4-spd. This up coming weekend i am pulling the 6 and granny because it is already sold. I built a 350 sbc and just picked up a muncie. Now my question is, once i get the motor and tranny (meaning the 350 and muncie) in place what do i do about the shifter because i heard something about it hitting the bench seat and the shifter being to short.

Thanks for any help in advance

First off welcome to the forum . and your right about the shifter, there are shifters that were made for the bench seat. Ive seen it in catologs for chevelles and ect. But they can some times be very pricy. heres a link to one for a four speed http://www.classicchevy.com/chevy-be...1955-1957.html. hope this helps

You can also have the seat redone with a u shape put where the shifter hit's it. A buddy of mine did this and it work very well in his truck.
Another choice is before installing the shifter have a truck stick welded on it so it clears the seat.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: I am 17 and need a little so called guidance

Have you searched the site much? There are a number of factors that need to be addressed in doing a I6 to V-8 swap. The engine sits in a different position on the frame. As a result the engine stands and mounts are different from the I6 parts. The transmission crossmember is manual transmission and from what I understand I6 specific as well. At a minimum it would need to be moved forward to the correct factory V-8 location. Of course if you are using a car trans. an auto. trans type crossmeber and mount could probably be adapted after pulling the other. The bellhousing has mount provisions you might need so don't sell it until you know for sure. The important thing is to plan the changes instead of bolting in parts and then trying to adapt clutch parts or create a hole off the shelf headers will not fit into. There is whole thread on that. Cooling issues as well need to be on your list.

Might start by reading this.

Hurst made replacement sticks for bench seats in cars if you already have a
Hurst shifter. If not you may be able to drill new mounting holes to fit what ever shifter you are using.

I have no help to offer you but I would like to welcome you to the website. There are a lot of nice guys/ladies on here that are very knowledgeable about the chevrolet trucks and what they need to be safer stronger better. Most if not all are willing to lend a hand and words or encouragement to help get you going and keep you going on your project. Re: I am 17 and need a little so called guidance

Like said above going from a L6 stick shift to a V-8 stick shift does require some mods.

V-8 stands need to be used. The rear cross member will need to be trimmed and moved forward if you use the L6 cross member. The clutch linkage bracket for a L6 and V-8 are different and the V-8 bracket will have to be moved forward on the frame.

A radiator with more cores may be needed.

A V-8 fan shroud will be required.

The driveshaft will have to modified.

These are just a few things we learned when replacing a L6 with a V-8 454.

Re: I am 17 and need a little so called guidance

When I did my 350 swap I used the 6 cyl bellhousing that was in the truck.I removed the 6 cyl engine mount bracket (the one from the motor to the rubber mount) and used the stock 6 cyl rubber engine mount on the V8.The bellhousing side mounts like a 55-57 chevy.I used the 6 cyl flywheel, clutch, etc. The only thing I had to change was my exhaust manifolds. The later model one that go under the spark plugs hit the engine stand.I used the old style ramhorn ones (they go over the spark plugs) from the 60's.Everything was bolt in.As for the shifter ,I heated it down where it came thru the floor and pushed it forward. Then after it cooled,I heated it about 4" up in front of the seat and pulled it back some.(I left the trans in 2nd gear and left a little clearance, make sure the seat all the way forward)
