Fuses keep blowing - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My SWB 4x4 keeps blowing the 20A fuse that carries the brake lights, interior lights, dash lights, etc.

The last wiring problem I had originated in the unused camper wiring.

Any thoughts?

very common for the harness along the drivers side framerail to have cracked andor bare wires causing shorts

sometimes the clamps themselves puncture the harness and cause the short too especially if the road salt gets in there and eats the wire casing

WHat ever you do, dont just put a bigger fuse in it. Ive heard some stories of people just putting bigger fuses in to solve the problem. The wires got hot and melted the wires together, all the car's wiring had to be redone,.

Did you check the wires that run under the carpet to the dome light?

if you do put in a bigger fuse you will eventually "let the smoke out" of the problem section. putting the smoke back in is a B1T(# so start tracing the wires or just re-wire all of it. It'll be ready for another 30 years.

I agree, also if it has been wired for trailer lights, that is the first place place you should check.

mine has been doing that recently to, i am trying to figure out though is why mine only does it in the winter usually when the temp drops below 40. the funny thing is that during the winter i will put about 6-7 fuses between thanksgiving and valentines but the rest of the year i will not change it at all. let me know what you come up with on fixing that it irritates the piss out of me.

check the condition of the orange/ white wire running donw the driverside rocker 9 times out of ten, sand, dirt and crud rub through the wire

the only thing that will blow a 20 amp fuse is (you guessed it)
more than 20 amps. i know that doesn't help but maybe it'll make you grin...... Tony

hey I have a similar problem...except that fuse will only blow if I turn my 4 way flashers on. I put a bigger fuse in, and it has been like that for quite some time...have used my flashers alot, once for 1.5+hours, no smoke, everything works fine...?

Problem solved!

The dark green wire running to the light switch was tooooo close to the heat stove on the driver's side exhaust manifold. Some insulation was burned through and the fuse would blow when copper met the steel stove.
