Cab lifting ideas...

I finally got the truck stripped down to the frame. The cab was much heavier than expected. I do not want to put it back on the way I took it off(with 3 people). Lets hear some ideas for cab lifting/moving, and lets see and contraptions you may have made to move the cab or bed around...

Thanks...

on my 65 we used an A frame and took the doors off of the truck, stuck chaing through the cab and put moving blankets around it so not to damage the truck and lifted it right off.

If you're doing this in a place where you have rafters overhead, you can rig up a chain hoist or come-along several ways using straps and/or 2X4s under the roof of the cab.... shouldn't be hard, get creative.

Chevelle454,
I came across this post about a month or so back here on this forum. Check out the link below. It involves a cherry picker.

Interesting way to pull a cab

Here is a link to Duallie's web site and his pictures of moving his cab on the car carrier he is building. You can select wooden cradle highlight to see the cherry picker position. Hope Duallie doesn't mind. http://www.ptialaska.net/~nickel/index.html

I like the engine hoist idea. What did he attach to for lifting?

I recall someone recently mentioning the engine hoist idea. I don't recall how they said they attached it to the cab.

What would you guess a stripped cab weighs, i.e., gutted interior, doors or glass?

Kubota... Not enough lift! Tow strap through the doors (with the windows down) and disconnect all ground straps and the SPEEDO cable (Ive made that mistake) and bingo, swing it slowly out of the way. The cherry picker is yet another way. You just need to go through the trans hump and use a few pipe supports and then secure it from front to back and be sure its balanced. That works too but it sometimes takes 2 people. The John Deere method is a one person deal and then you can say ouy did it yourself! As long as you get it done, damage free. you have it made and no one goes to the hospital!

i got a smoking, flathead, runs on 2 out of 4 cylinders Hyster forklift with 6 foot long forks. seems to do the trick. works nice on pullin beds, also makes for tool less engine removal on junk cars!!

Same as above, a 58 hyster H50 and a 58 IH 340 Utility w/ forklift attachment, both work for lifting beds, cabs, and whatever else, ask old Rusty C10, that's how we got the cab in his Ranger!

Thanks DDSmith... I built a beam out of two 2x6's and sawed some small grooves in the top to locate on the weatherstripping lip at the front of the door openings. Then I drilled the tip of my engine hoist so I could run a bolt out the top of the hoist arm, sticking out an inch or so. Then I drilled a matching hole in the bottom of the 2x6 beam in the exact center to receive the bolt spike. You can see in my site how well it worked.

TRUCK UPDATE:
I rebuilt the 513 Cadillac, the Turbo475 got some Allison parts, but I'm fighting the approach of winter and more important projects have to be completed.
