Vintage air teaser pics

It's coming along. I'll do a full write up in a couple weeks

I'm going to be repainting my dash, how does everyone keep the area around the keys from chipping (see pic 3)?

I didn't like cutting out the vents, it wasn't fun.

What did you cut them out with? What's the part #on the vents? I need to do that to mine before I paint it, can you tell me the dimensions of the templates?

What size of a hole did you cut for the round vents? My truck has the full size holes that the factory used and I want to go to the smaller vents, which means redoing the holes for that new vents. I haven't purchased the vents yet, the Vintage aire unit that I got was originally planned for the bigger vent trim pieces.

It's actually fairly simple, BUT the directions are a little vague at times. I've done more than a few things twice

Re: Vintage air teaser pics

Very cool about doing this. I have the same kit and had to cut out vents as well. That really sucks that your dash is painted already and then you had to do this.

Looking forward to the engine side of the kit, I didn't buy that and I'm not sure what all is needed for the smaller stuff.

Re: Vintage air teaser pics

^ It's OK, it was last painted in 1998. I'm just going to spray can it. I hope to do a complete frame up in a few years, after I've got all the crap I want in it working and installed (and after I've ENJOYED it for a few years )

Rob, they're not the stock vents, but if you pay more $$$ with the vintage kit, they'll "upgrade" to the "stock style" for you. The instructions say to use a 2 1/2" hole saw, but it's a hair too small, so I used a grinder bit on a drill to open them up some. I also think they're a little high, but I followed VA instructions. The holes for the stock vents are MUCH bigger.

Here's the instructions, you can print them out and cut out the templates.

http://vintageair.com/DownloadsSecti...ols)%20Ine.pdf

This is what I did, tape them up per the instructions, then drill a pilot hole. I drilled 4 in the center vent.

Make sure you MEASURE the center of the center vent, THE TEMPLATE IS NOT CENTERED ON THE PAPER. I was about to drill holes when I realized this! I'm glad I caught it, my vent would have been 1/4" to the left.

Hold up a sec, I thought I wasn't doing this yet!

Don't worry fellas, I've already taken over 50 pictures for the "install thread."

I ended up moving the hole down about 3/8". I had to trim the brace behind the dash a little, but it fits nearly flush now. Here are some pictures and thanks for the info (I added a link to your write up in my build thread, ).

Thanks man! I'm going to cut mine out tomorrow. Are your round vents plastic or billet?

Re: Vintage air teaser pics

I just added the small compressor to my 71. I have factory air already except I changed it to a late model system about 6 years ago. Did away with the dryier. I have the accumlator now. I'm running 134A also and it is working great, just have to get the outside vent fixed so it's not sucking hot air inside all the time. Nice job on the cutouts mine were done by hand snce I bought all the stuff out of a wreck.

It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Question: What is that round thing you have bolted over your original blower hole location on the firewall?

That's what comes with the retro-fit kit. I'm doing a custom setup, so I will be piecing everything together. I smoothed the firewall on mine and will be using a 4 hole aluminum bulkhead fitting.

^ Yep.

I'm getting closer. I test fit everything, found out I did a couple things wrong fixed those, test fit crap again, it was all good, and the dash is primed. I'll get it painted tonight but will be gone again this weekend So close, yet no time to finish

can you buy that delete piece from them alone, I wonder? I might hafta call and find out. I'd like a temporary option to delete my blower hole.

Re: Vintage air teaser pics

Running: check. First startup: http://satellitehead.com/stuff/FirstStartup.zip

Seats installed: nope. Still sitting on the basement floor.

Time to work on the truck: zero. Can't walk w/o crutches right now. More info: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=243166

Desire to finish: Exorbitant. That's the best word to describe it.

Downside is, I need to replace the rear OČ sensor in my DD (The VW, you've seen it), and I don't have time to replace the water pump/PS pump/thermostat/serpentine belt/alternator and all the other crap, so ... like ... I think I might just let someone else do the work on the latter of those.

BUT. Anyway. Yeah, the truck was running. I tore it all down. I got a cowl with no antenna provision from board member 'uncle' (Thanks, Tim!) and made firewall blockoff plates for the stock blower, and just as I was finishing painting them, KERACK! there goes my toe. Never got to install them, thus I never finished the wiring. Sucks! Oh well.

Some day ..... over the rainbow, it seems.
