Is it a crime to change colors of a 50th Anniversary?

Found a nice '68 for sale in the gold/white 50th anniversary color scheme.

Looks like a very nice truck, but my plan has been an LS swap and a color more vivid than the facory's relatively bland goldish color.

Is the 50th Anniversary special enough that it should stay that way, or is a color change no biggie?

What sayeth the intelligent hoardes that knowest far more than I???

It's your truck, but I wouldn't. It's too hard to take it back to what it was after painting it. I don't mind the ls swap, but I would keep the Gold/White paint scheme. It might even grow on you. Or you may even offer to trade it or sell it to someone that would enjoy having an anniversary edition truck. JMHO.

I've spoken/emailed the seller, haven't had a chance yet for a close-up look.

If it is as nice as it appears in the pictures, and is original, I'd have a tough choice- One quick look in my garage will show that I typically don't give a rip about originality.

If this one truely deserves to be preserved, I may pass, and find another truck for a project.

If I don't buy, I'll post it here for others to have the opportunity.

The purist I am says keep the stock color because of what it is. However if you are going to update the driveline like your are planning a color update would be in line. Thinking a nice ivory with just a hint of gold pearl and a bolder HOK gold would be awesome.

I am with Tim when it comes to being a purist on some of our trucks and the 50th is one of those. Changing the color is like painting a 69 GTO Judge anything other than the original orange. Is the truck all original now? If I had to save this truck and modify a not so rare 68, that is the road I would take. If the truck is already in a not so original state and needs a lot of work to return it to original then I would be fine with the LS upgrade and color change.

What ever you decide, make it for you and be happy with your choice.

If you are going to do an LS swap, it will not matter what you do with paint. Its no longer original, thus being a 50th Anniversary edition wont apply any longer.

My vote is a stoning at noon. But at some point you may regret it. It's yours treat it like your child n be happy.

Is there any VIN or other data plate proof from the factory that it's a "50th anniv"? If not, then any one can clone one with paint and I wouldn't be very concerned with modifing it.

Paint it. No one in the real world cares about these trucks. Just us. I think you should make it your own. You are the one footing the bills you should be happy with it. When i had my REAL 72 super repainted i changed the color.

So True. Nobody gives hoot what we drive. I say paint it however you want and fix it how you please.

Gotta admit- I had no idea about the 50th trucks until I started lurking here, learning what to look for and what to avoid.

But after plenty of lurking & searching, now I know.

The truck will get a close inspection very soon. If it is an original 50th, and as nice underneath as it appears, I will either leave it as is, or pass on buying this one, and find a "nothing special" truck to build to my tastes.

I'm torn on this stuff too! I have a "rare" harley that was only made 1 year, and limited supply. I keep thinking to just chop it/rake it/fat tire it, but can't bring myself to do it. I guess all-in-all, it is YOUR truck, so you should do what you'd like, BUT at the same time, if it's a rare classic, it should be left alone.

i've got the same problem! 72 short super with big block, build sheet and docs from birth, mine is "ochre" ... and after thinking about it for the last few months. i will keep it ochre!. just to keep it origial paint and all !

but its your truck and you should build it the way you like.

Wise man. Resale value to a collector always takes a hit when the color is changed. Only exception is when entire vehicle is taken down to bare metal, which not many do. Anybody notice the ugliest trucks in wrecking yards are the ones with the older repaints another color?
