Starter wiring

Just finished wiring up my sons truck with a new wiring harness from American Autowire Power Plus 13. I wanted to test out the headlights and the signal lights. But when go and hookup the battery cables. The starter spins. I don't think I connected the starter correctly. The starter didn't come with any instructions. Can someone take a look at the pic and tell if I connected it correctly.

Thanks,
Ramiro

Re: Starter wiring

From what i can tell the heavy gauge wire that is black in photo should be moved over to the other larger post , nothing should be attached to that threaded post except the existing copper jumper wire that feeds the starter motor , so by you having that hooked up on that side as soon as you hook battery up you are bypassing solenoid and causing starter engaging .
Hopefully that helps

Re: Starter wiring

Here's a better diagram to help you with the smaller wires , the purple should be the neutral safety switch wire and the red one should go to coil

Thanks Steelheader. That's what I thought I did. Just hope my neutral safety wire is hooked up to the correct terminal. Also I didn't connect any other wire since I don't have a coil.

It's not. The purple wire goes to the other small terminal.

Re: Starter wiring

call me crazy, but it looks like the main lug nearest the starter should only have the main lead from the actual starter to it, but there appears to be a large black main lugged lead going to it. Is that by chance your main lead from the battery? if so, that is why the starter goes on as soon as you connect to the battery. This main lead must go to the main lug that is opposite of this one, or furthest away from the starter, as shown in the earlier pic.

88Stanger I hooked up the main battery to the wrong lug. Hopefully I hooked up the correct lug for the neutral safety switch. I will change the battery cable tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow we can get my sons truck going.
