Summit Carbs???

I'm sure there are some members that have used summit's remanufactured qjet carbs. how are they working for you, same performance as an original qjet, better? i've been looking at replacing my edelbrock 1406 for a while and heard many good things about the qjet. i've been thinking about using this one http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-210200/ as its pretty much bolt in for my application.

Why do you want to replace your edel? Summit has someone rebuild their carbs. You just need to be careful cuz a quad is a spread bore and an edelbrock is a square bore. Do you have a stock intake or aftermarket with an adapter? Oops...just read your signature line says Edelbrock intake but they make both types of bores. I'd just rebuild your Edel and save the money. I know a ton of guys that love quads. I like the Edelbrocks because they have the same size barrels. There is a big transition from the primaries to the secondaries on a quad. Then again...I have a small p/t Holley business and that's all I run.

thing is i've been fidiling with this carb for over a year trying to get it run right. it has always run rich. i've already rebuilt it, is prefectly clean, floats are set. i can tell its running rich because when i rev the engine it shoots out a puff of black smoke. the carb is a spread bore so i dont have to worry about adaptors. plus my fuel economy is absolutly horrible and the engine lacks power. my buddy in a completely stock 71 gmc can kick my truck's butt and i have a somewhat built engine, and they both have 350s. plus the fact i got my @$$ handed to me by a ford diesel the other day.

I just picked up a Holley 4175 (actual Holley spread bore) off eBay, straight from Holley (factory refurb) for about $250. Food for thought.

It's a little more complicated than that. What elevation are you at? Most carb manufacturer's jet their carbs for sea level. If you are at 3k, 4k, 5k in elevation, and you buy another new carb, you have a good chance at the same problem. What's nice about the Edelbrocks is how easy they are to re-jet. They make drop in metering rods that might solve your problem. It's for sure that a properly tuned stock motor can beat a mildly beefed up motor if the A/R ratios are wrong. Leaning out the motor will build more power if it's running rich. You just can't go too far or you'll start melting pistons.

I would stick with what you have and maybe rebuild it. If not, go with a Holley, easier to tune.

That is expensive, I would around for a local carb shop, do these exist anymore? They can setup your carb, or rebuild it for much cheaper. You can probably send yours somewhere to be checked out for cheaper if you can't find a local guy that isn't incompetent.
