230 3 speed behind 283 ?

Hi all I,ve hunted all thru this forum and found that the bell housing and flywheel from the 230 should fit the 283. What I want to know is the original 3 speed up to the task of the 283 or are they one and the same ?
Would like to keep 230 but mines not rebuildable and the,re as rare as hens teeth over here but have more chance of getting hold of a 283, just looking at my options.
thanks in advance

That 3 speed should hold up behind a 283, or most any small block, as long as it isn't wore out, and you don't hammer on it hard.

Re: 230 3 speed behind 283 ?

Cruiser , I swapped my 230 for a 283 about 2 years ago using most of the original 230 parts ( i.e.- bellhousing , tranny , etc. ) and have had no problems in limited driving . If the tranny is in decent shape and you don't hammer it , it should be okay . Good luck !

The same gearbox was used on the 230 and 283, so you shouldn't have any problems if it is in good shape now. Just don't put foot-wide tires on the rear and dump the clutch.
