dizzy is got me stumped
I have a new aluminum intake by Holley and when I drop the dizzy all the way in and put the dizzy clamp on I can still rotate the dizzy pretty easy, I have bought a new gasket for the dizzy and and also a new dizzy toe clamp and still have the same issue, i can rotate the darn dizzy pretty easy. Do i need to put like a 280 grit sandpaper between the dizzy and the intake to stop the movement, what am I doing wrong?

It sounds like the dizzy is bottomed out, have the heads or block been milled? are you sure it has engaged in the in the oil pump shaft?

all I changed was the intake, nothing else to my knowledge has changed, I'm pretty sure the dizzy is engaged into the oil pump shaft, I think it is. if the dizzy wasnt engaged into the oil pump shaft would the dizzy not be seated flush with the intake opening for the dizzy or would the dizzy still have like a quarter inch space between it and the intake?/.

If its flush with the intake then it is engaged, are you sure the clamp is up on the collar of the dizzy?

It would be flush if it was engadge properly. Take a flashlight and look in the hole to be sure the shaft is where it is supposed to be. I'm confused on how it could still be spinning with the clamp on....is it possible they gave you the wrong intake?? Check the clamp with your old one too.

Might check the clamp bolt, make sure the bolt is not bottoming out in the hole or bottoming on the bolt shank before the clamp is tight. I had a similar problem with a Performer intake. The aftermarket guys don't always get the bolt holes drilled and tapped to the same depth as the factory did.

Take the clamp off,and flip it over. The clamps are not perfectly flat.If the "legs"are pointing up it will not clamp tight.

Maybe even clamp it in a vise and give it a little love tap to give it a little more bend. The hold down clamp, that is.

You could always use a stud and nut to rule this problem out.

the bolt dont bottom out, I also have added a lock washer no help. the guy at the parts store says to try to score the intake minor amount and the surface that touches the intake on the dizzy a minor amount to see if it will catch on the scores instead of slipping on the smooth intake, smooth gasket and smooth dizzy surface for it has something to catch on. I have never seen this before with the slippage, but first time for everything i guess. So I'm thinking about useing a way scrapper from work and scoring these surfaces. um I guess machinist tools do come in handy once inawhile. any other ideas before I go about the scoring issue?

check with a machine shop for some valve spring shims to fit under the collar of dizzy. maybe evn some king pin shims or pinion gear shims.
it sounds like loose manufacturing tolerances or Pedro got a little carried away on a Friday afternoon.

I find it to be a somewhat common problem with aluminum intakes, my fix when using steel distributor retainers has always been to put the retainer in a vice and tweak the ears downward so they grasp the distributor better. If you use one of the billet distributor retainers they are thicker and you won't have the problem. I wouldn't sand lightly on either the distributor or intake as then your only reducing the thickness of both which could make it worse and a slight amount of scoring with sandpaper will not stop the distributor from rotating.

I bought a new dist hold down clamp from Summit, was junk no matter how tight I got it, it would still move. I went back to the stock one, no more movement. Dont know what kind you bought, thought I would just throw that idea out there.

ell I have 3 diffrent dizzy clamps now and the stock one, no way wont hold at all, then i bought a chrome one at the parts store, way too thin, no way wont even hold, the third one I boughtm chrome a little thicker well its almost tight enough to hold. I like the comment about welding little tits on the bottom of it for a little more bite. I'll keep ya all posted on the outcome. this stinks

I agree with Paul take the retainer put it in a vise and bend the the 2 feet tabs. Don't space the dizzy up and you shouldn't have to adjust, sand/scrape/punch, the intake or dizzy (if they were that poor of quality the sizes were off they would be out of business). If you have more room to tighten down the bolt it should hold the dizzy, Do your retainers have a slot for the bolt and are you snugging it all the way up against the dizzy?

If the intake is thinner, you could be bottoming out the distributor against the oil pump shaft. If this is the case you will cause undue wear and tear to the distributor, oil pump and shaft. I recommend you get some distributor shims to get your distributor to clamp down properly.

Fabricate a washer that is slotted on one side that you can slide under the hold down clamp as a shim.
