Re: Distributor?

Don't quite know how to answer your poll, but I'll give you some personal experiences:

I have a 35+ year old Mallory that we used to run in a race car. Then I ran it in my V-8 Vega until I got rid of the car.
Now we use it as a "test bed."
Anytime we suspect we have a distributor problem on something, car/truck/boat, we jerk the distributor & drop in that Mallory. It never fails us.
I had an ACCEL in one of my boats, loved it to death.
When I bought my '69, it had an ACCEL in it, biggest POS that ever came down the pike.
I replaced that ACCEL with a complete MSD system; spark box, coil, distributor & plug wires. I can't say enough good things about it.
I hit the starter & the truck fires.

Just my .02.

Re: Distributor?

Yep, got one of the Skip White dist from Ebay for our 383. Good unit but -- Vacuum advance screw adjuster did not work, replaced with a spare vac adv I had. The unit I got only has 16 degrees mechanical advance, and 14 deg initial advance is all I can run and have it start without kicking back, so I am limited to 30 total mechanical advance. I'll have to see if I can get it to do a little more when it warms up. I also changed to lighter springs in the advance, but that is a tuning thing, nothing bad about that.

Re: Distributor?

Summit brand HEI unit, really no different than the accel from what I can tell, and you get the adjustable vacuum advance can, it runs around $100...

But if you can get a new one for $50 then there's your answer. Spend the rest on something more fun!

I think for what you want i would go electronic. There are alot of aftermarket ones out there for less than $100

Re: Distributor?

I took the stock HEI unit out of my 83 454 and it makes my 71 402 run like a dream. Only had to change the lead wire to a higher gauge without the resistor. Of course you need HEI wires and re-gap your plugs to .045.You can probably get one from a junk yard really cheap.

Re: Distributor?

I can personally reccomend the MSD pro-billet.

Mechanical advance. easy to change, pigtails directly to an MSD 6 or 7 series ignition (gives you digital ignition) which makes starting the truck WAY FRICKIN EASY!!!
MSD is good at giving you extra parts for installation and timing choice, as well as complete directions. Their tech support is a wee bit stupid in the face though.

I have had the factory one in my truck since i bought my truck!!! I think that the only time you need a high performance distributor if if you have the complete ignition system!!!! Just my .02

Re: Distributor?

So,who wants to know where to buy a Skip White unit?cost ya $50 to find out. (I just don`t know.Ebay,I think?)

The factory HEI "is" a performance distributor. You`d need alot of motor before needing anything more. You can put lighter springs and heavier weights for faster advance. But,not necessary until engine dynamics are changed.

Re: Distributor?

so, speaking of engine dynamics...
what did most of our small blocks come with as far as head specs (intake, exhaust, and cc).

these are the dynamics that dictate degree and speed of advance
