Swapping to Left side (drivers) drop axle & NP205 on 67-72 K10 ?
What are the recipe ingredients to swap to a drivers side drop axle and np205 in a 67-72 Chevy K10 ? Are there any bolt-in DHD/DLD front axle assemblys same width, perches etc. as the 67-72 for this ..ford, dodge ? Want to keep the trucks streetable 3:07 ratios, so I guess D44 is it. Im hearing 75-76 Ford pickup axle (open knuckle, kingpins) & keep the K10 knuckles on out, anyone confirm ? Transmission is TF 727, so 6 bolt round, 23 spline input on the married left drop np205.

youre a little misinformed.
1978-79 ford f250 dana 44s. they are open knuckle, but not king pins. ball joints rather. these share the same spring perch width as gm. they are 8 lug with dual piston calipers, so why not swap in the matching 60 rear or a 14 bolt. for cool points. oops just saw the trans. i dont know if the dodge input is a small bearing input. or if that will swap into the large bearing ford case. however there may be a bearing that i dont know about that lets you put a small bearing dodge input into a large bearing ford case. im not too up on my dodge 205 parts. if the dimentions of the dodge input bearing match the ones of the ford then it shouldnt be too much of an issue. do you have a pic of the dodge input? |

Assisting/consulting putting a 4BT (hence the 727) into a 69 K10 and the single 4" exhaust pipe runs down the pass side, aint no room whatsoever to squeek it past/under the pass drop xfer case. So, decided to see whats out there to move it over to drivers side. Still would like to keep the NP205 though. Dodge had a married 205 for several years, but I believe they're all pass drop like chevy. Just trying to narrow down the combination of what to get from where. He's actually planning on putting the CTD D61 (only "60" that has/fits 3:07s) in the rear, but as for the front, Dodge didnt move the x-fer case to the drivers side until 94 and Im not sure if they kept the D61 in the front when they did that. I know they went to vacuum locked center section at that time, so I assume they changed the front axle design, I also know they dropped the 205 (went to 241 I think) when they did that move. I told him he should probably focus on the D44 for the front for pan clearance (he wants to retain stock truck look and hieght) and ease of locating a drivers drop axle. Ill see if I can get a pic of the output. I think his trans is actually a 47RH but TF727 is same bolt pattern. Didnt know the ferds were ball joint, trying to stay with open/kingpin so he can use his stock knuckles, since I understand the ford stuff gets "less cooperative" with Chevy out near the knuckles/spindles etc.

King pin vs ball joint isn't a Ford to GM issue, but a 44 to 60. The 44 is balljoint 1/2 and 3/4 ton, whereas Ford and GM 60s are kingpin 1 ton. Those are intechangable between Ford and GM from the knuckles out. And 3.08 stopped in 93 with Dodge. 3.55 is available in 94+ cad axles.
High pinion Ford axles offer "less" oil pan clearance because of the higher up pinion. The bulk of the diff is higher up. Not to mention the massive cummins oil pan. If it were me I'd use a 3" exhaust and passenger drop equipment. Posted via Mobile Device |
