I have a built 327 and i am debating on a 600 performance series edelbrock or a 650 thunder series....
what do you guys think?

There are a ton of folks here with opinions about what size and which carb to use. For me, I'm happy with the Edelbrock 750 cfm Q-Jet...but it is no longer available. In my opinion, the Q-Jet (from any source) that is a quality rebuild....is a good carburetor. The 275-horse 327 that was in my '67 Caprice was a great engine. So, I'm recommending a Q-Jet. Let's see what else shakes out of the group.

I think for a street driven truck I would go with the 600.Usually a smaller cfm rating will get better throttle response at the more limited RPM's a street engine sees.

I think you would be surprised what a 500 2-bbl Holley would do on that engine.

I personally don't like Edelbrocks. Never had any that ran right. I really like the Holley Street Avenger series carbs.

If you want a "performance" carburetor, look into the QFT Holleys.

Otherwise, the Q-jet would be an excellent carb, if it's built right.

I'll put my Qjet against any other carb out there. It was built by the "carb shop". Dual plane manifold I "assume". Tuned a few Edelbrocks...not too impressed...and raced several Holleys....Nice but finicky sometimes

I've got 4 edelbrock 1406's. Two are on work trucks used on the ranch everyday 365 days a year.
If you want something for putting your foot in it, get a holley ( tried holleys including a Truck Avenger ).

I have had good luck with the 1406. Easy to tune and easy to change springs and jets for altitude.
These things bounce around the ranch all the time and I hardly ever touch them except when I do a tune up and change plugs.

I do have an older holley 650 double feed ( not double pumper ) that is on my 71 shortwide. I haven't touched it in years and it has been on the truck since 1991.
I think sometimes you get a good carb and sometimes you don't, it doesn't matter what brand.

No one asked about your cam specs? thats a VERY important factor in choosing the correct carb for your truck.

A well tuned q-jet.......or a holley are your best options. don't go edelbrock.

Cam? Heads? Squarebore? Spreadbore? So many people believe that a big carb is going to make their engine run better. It's usually not the case. Unless you are commonly running over 7,500 RPM forget about anything over 600cfm. A Barry Grant Demon 525 would be a good choice for a mildly built 327. They're a good buy at around $300 at Jegs. I'm running a 390 Holley on mine. You would be surprised at the performance it provides.

What size heads do you have? A 600 should be plenty but me personaly I like simplisity of the deamon carbs check the road carbs they are very easy to tune any they run great if you have smaller heads the smaller carb u need we run a 750 on a 550hp 392 Windsor engine in our dragcar and it's plently carb for the setup

another vote for the q-jet. i have had good luck with them over the years and preform well on a mild daily driver motor. keep the cfm small,(500-600) too many people over do it when it comes to picking a carb.

I would consider what you want to do with your carb and truck. If all you are doing is daily driving, then a 600 CFM carb is undoubtedly a good size. If youare going to work it hard, the look for a larger carb. I ran an Edelbrock 750 CFM carb for awhile and found it to be a pain to manage on the street. It caused a lot of OVER-fueling issues and a lot f debris was left on my valves that should not be there. so,I chose a 650 CFM Thunder series AVS carb for my stroker engine and I will admit that it does not give me all of the top end power that I would (at times) like to have. However, I am getting a solid 15 MPG on a 385 stroker engine with 3.73 gears and a 700 R4 tranny. That is not exceptional, but it is really good for a 4000 lb truck and approximately 390 HP. If you are looking for a good all around GM style carb, the Q-jet design is the best, small primaries and large secondaries gives a good transition from cruise to power, but you will need to use a spread bore intake. I am thinking about the EZ EFI for my truck to get the capabilites on both ends and then possibly get more MPG from the stroker engine. My cam profile is what I have to match up to for this project.

Honda...Yamaha?
Husq...Stihl?

People are going to have their favorites, usually based on past success, and that's what they will recommend. My love of Holleys is more than just what has worked for me in the past. I also like the one feature that they share with no other carb (FOR THE MOST PART). I can get cheap, small cfm carbs, and use the blocks, shooters, pumps, bowls, throttle shafts....etc to make 750+ cfm racing carbs. It's great to take a $50 600 double pumper, get a bare base and throttle blades, a 750 or bigger HP main body and build a $400 - $600 carb. Hard to do with the others. Doesn't mean they are not good carbs. Just doesn't work for my needs. The mods you can do on a holley with basic shop tools is pretty incredible!!

I have a 650 Holley DP on my mild 327. It performs better than the Edelbrock 1405 I had on it, but I have had to put smaller jets in it to get it right.

I vote for q-jet too. If you want a install it and forget it setup you can contact some quality builders like Sean Murphy Induction.
I've been really happy with my stage II.

hmmm.....I'm running TWO Holleys side by side and don't find myself thinking about them at all.

Man....imagine a tunnel ram with dual Q-jets. Can you say A$$ x 2???

I'm just having fun here! Really...the only problem I have with Q-jets are their looks. You get past that and they are a great carb. I can't get past the looks though. Holley is the coolest looking carb ever built. Just ask Barry Grant.....that's why he basically copied the darn thing. Good changes though.

personally i prefer stock , and in real time driving , going to and from you will find GM and its team of engineers gave you a motor cam carb that was bullitproof and ran excellent . So to call this short q jet cleaned and stock cam within close proximity to Gm spec and you will always ahve a nice running fuel efficient lots of vacuum for brakes - just my 2 cents

Love 1406's easy to tune, simple to rebuild. Never had luck with holleys, wont use them if you gave them to me.

Got a 1406 on the GMC, 1405 (manual choke) on the burb....Q-Jet on the shortbed, once it goes out a 1406 will go on.
