Timing Chain Slop Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

While fixing an oil leak on the timing chain cover, I noticed my timing chain has quite a bit of play. You can easily move it left and right with your finger. Is it normal to have some timing chain play or should you not be able to move it much? Thanks very much for any replies.

its worn out. spend the money and buy a good double roller chain and it wont stretch out like that. edelbrock chains are great and not priced bad either

Or, Cloyes.Don`t let it go.If it jumps,you`ll end up with bent pushrods or,worse yet,bent valves.

what they said is VERY IMPORTANT and your truck will run much better.

The way to check for timing chain stretch (normally) is to check the timing of #1 and #6 cylinders. More than 6* difference is not good for normal driving. More than 3* difference is not good for high RPM speeds.

Good point Stocker, I'd even add go one step further and adjust the valves while my hands are dirty.

You're already in there, replace it. It will be a PITA to do it later.
