Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

I installed my new hedmans last night. The issue is that the driver side header is hitting the back of the lower A arm. I mean it bolts up fine but it is actually touching the a arm. Anyone else have this issue? Before i get flamed i will take some pics tonight.
Thanks

There is a younger guy here that had that same problem.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

I had a similar problem, I checked the A-frame for alignment (in the U-bolts) then I loosened them up (the U-bolts) and slid the A-frame forwand a 1/2" and it cleared beautifully. I went through three or four different headers to find that I liked the Hooker Coms and they fit the best, but not perfect.

This is good to know! I'm just getting ready to order some headers for my sb 67 and was wondering which brand fits the best.

Someone above me made a good point, if your Motor mounts and Trannys
mounts are USED, then they might rub, I had that problem on my old 67, I
thought it was the headers, turned out to be a squished motor mount

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

I too have hedmen elites on a 71, its a good fit. I did grind into the frame approx 1/8" on both sides around one of the tubes (cant remember which) just to make sure the tubes dont rub the frame. Its close to the lower a-arm on one side as well, but clears without issues. This is a 2wd w/sbc350 in stock position.

Question Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

Not to take over the thread, but anyone know if big blocks have the same issues? I've heard alot about the SB issues, but little about BB ones.

I have Hedman Elites in my 72. They fit fine. I tried 2 sets of Hookers and both hit either the oil pan or the frame mounts.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

You cant slide the A arm anywhere. It has a alignment pin in the crossmember and it has to stay where it is. Unless it's not set in correctly now but I dont think that's possible.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

I have hedman's on my truck. And it rubs the passenger side frame.

Also when I ordered them I ordered them for a manual trans. And they sent me the auto one's.So they rubbed the z-bar.I had to use a BFH to get them to fit.

Had the same problem. Replaced the tranny mount and it straightened everything out.

this is something to look at. also, is the motor in the original position?
I have the regular Hedmanns on my lowered 68 using original arms with '80 spindles. I think my engine is in correct. I measured another 2wd just to make sure. no problems at all.

Same with my hedmans, Summit part number HED-69090, fit great on the drivers side, rubs the frame on the passenger side.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

Could this have anything to do with the truck being lowered? Or is it lowered?

JRB

Does Doug Thorley Make headers for these old trucks? I know there expensive but I dont think I have ever heard a bad thing about Doug's except how much they cost.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

Yes, Thorley has a Tri-Y header for the 67-72's I'm also considering Stan's Headers which are a Tri-Y design and only a few bucks more but the flange doesn't have the welded O-ring design, they're machined flat and Stan claims the welded O-ring causes leaks. Doug Thorley used to work for Stan's Headers.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

My uncle has a set of Doug Thorleys on his 77 4x4 BB.
They look crappy after a few years it's a corrosion protection coating and there was no warranty on it. The shop made him aware of that before the purchase. They did turn blue and rusty after a few years sitting on the truck outside. They are a really thick tube think 14 gauge ? That's why he bought them not for long lasting looks. They tend to rot from the inside out.

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

For the BB guys...has anyone tried sanderson headers? Good or bad comments would be great. I am getting ready to swap out my small block for a 454/TH400 and I need to decide which headers will work. By the way...I'd like a 3/4 length header for ground clearance being that I want to bag this thing someday. Also, it sounds like the motor mounts can be an issue. I was looking at the set performance online offers.

http://www.performanceonline.com/sto...cat=455&page=1

Thanks

Kevin

Re: Those who have Hedman Hedders I have a ?

I have Hedmans on the 350 in my '71 Jimmy [K/1500]. They were a tight fit, but I did have to joggle the ears on the Z-bar to make the end of the lower clutch rod miss one of the downtubes. The other issue is that you have to completely pull off the passenger side "hedder" if you have to R&R the starter. Outside of the occasional tightening of the bolts on the exhaust plate to eliminate leaks -- common to any headers -- they have worked well for 7 years in this truck.

I installed Hedmans on my lowered '70 350 4-speed and they fit with out any problems.
I now have Hooker Comps on the same truck and they fit just as good or maybe a little bit better.
