Is there also one on the front of the compressor? That goes to the water pump mount? You might try checking that. Seems like it makes the most difference in adjustment. Also check to see if you flipped the intake bracket backwards. jeff.

Just my opinion ,,,,, the bolts that go into the manifold and valve cover bracket are not adjusters ,,,, they hold everything tight after you adjust the bolt that actually holds the compressor to the bracket.

Also if you painted the bolts they're gonna glog up the threads.

Another trick ,,,,, If a bolt doesn't seat where you want it to, put a washer(s) on it. Not a permanent fix but might get you by in a jam.

My problem is that i cant adjust the belt because the adjustable brackets that go across the valve cover and the manifold stop before the belt is tight. it seems like I put one on the brackets that go to the water pump or the one that connects to it, backwards or something.

Did you possibly mix the alt belt with the AC belt? I don't remember for sure, but think they may be fairly close in length. If you replaced belts with new ones, are they the correct parts? The parts stores around here are always trying to give me the incorrect ones. Good luck.

My pickup is a '72 with AC, PS, and altenator. Can't look at the pickup, but my records show that I run a Gates 8555 for the AC belt and a Gates 7530 for the Altenator belt. The AC belt goes around the crank, water pump, and AC compressor. The altenator belt goes around the crank, water pump, and altenator. The PS pump has its own belt. Hope this is correct and that it helps.
