4.10/4.11 gear question?
When did the change come about, which is newer?

I think that only the Dana rear ends had 4.10s and the Corporate/Eaton rear ends had the 4.11s. I've got the original Corp/Eaton rear in my truck and it has 4.11's.

The difference is in the gear teeth.
4.10 is 41-10 4.11 is 37-9 They were used it different housings. 4.10 was in the 8.5" Corporate they were used in: 77-87 K10 and K20 front 77-91 K5 front 80-02 C/K10 and K5 rear 4.10 was also used in 8.875 (12 bolt) truck 64-82 K5 K10 K20 rear 4.10 was aslo used in Dana44 axles 67-76 K10 K20 front (though the ending year is not absolute, they used what they had) 4.11 was a Chevrolet car ratio in the 10 bolt versions. 12 bolt cars are available with either depending upon application or brand. 4.11 was also a 9" Ford ratio. The ratio difference is unimportant......many trucks have slightly different ratios front to rear. |

FWIW, I heard the 4.10 ring and pinion gear was stronger, can't remember why. I think the number of teeth on the pinion...

don't forget about 4.09s, also has to do with thin and thick gear sets around the carrier breaks.

Ive heard that trucks got 4:10 and cars got 4:11 as a rule of thumb. My 67 c10 has 4:10's in the 12 bolt factory rear.

it just depends on the axle. like previously said, the Eaton has 4.11 gears instead of 4.10, and it also has 4.57's instead of the normal 4.56's, and 5.14's instead of 5.13's.
