SPID Question

A 350 engine is not listed on my SPID as being an option. Does that automatically mean that I have a 307 and not a 350? I know the engine in my 70 is original but I'm not sure exactly what it is.

that is correct.
If your VIN starts with CE or KE, and no optional engine is listed, then yes, your truck originally had the 307.

I have a SPID related request for info. I recently bought a 72 Short stepside with some interesting option codes. Has anyone ever heard of 1909 ALL SERVICES MARKETING, 1886A RADIATOR OVERFLOW (It's not there anymore, though), 1983AA CONSIGNEE CAUTION, 19K1AC US ARMY MARKETING, 1988AA VEHICLE DECONCOMANI, 19A9AAFORM 139 INSPECTION 16Y2AC TRANSMISSION DRAIN, 1882AA PERMANENT ANTIFREEZE, 16Y1AA ENGINE OIL DRAIN or any of the other odd codes? It also has CIGARETTE LIGHTER listed twice, 1U3710 and 19D6AA. It appears the truck was a military truck. Air Force? It HAD a 350, power brakes and auto trans and power brakes, but nothing else. Motor radiator and trans are gone. I would post a picture of the SPID, but I am new here and cannot figure out how to add photos...

It says USArmy on the SPID, right? Has it been repainted to blue to make you think it was USAF?

sounds like a typical military optiond truck. Pics would be sweet! The 350 part sounds odd, I thought all the military ones were inline 6.

Nope. Not all. I think it's very rare to find one with a 350 though. 68350 used to have a 72 that was an army truck, smiliar SPID to that one (don't remember what it said, but it was rittled with odd options and codes like that), Army green, shortbox stepside, 350 setup. If it was from around here, probably Minot Air Force Base truck. Later was sold to a small town, used for a fleet vehicle. Still has some asphalt on the stepsides. I think the firewall had rust on that truck, right at the top on one of those pinch weld joints. Kinda odd. I still have a fender and the stepside box off of it. I think he has the glovebox door somewhere still.

Still, most military trucks had an inline, but some oddly enough had 350's. I don't think all were four speeds either. I think that one 68350 had was an original auto. I don't believe the 350/TH350 were listed on the SPID either.

Elco SS in Vietnam???

Here are some pics of the truck and SPID. As you can see, it lists a 350 engine and a turbo hydramatic trans. I sure wish I had the original drivetrain. I have a 355 I rebuilt that was in my 71 Elco back in high school, and a 700r4. I wonder what gear ratio is in the rear axle on this truck... If it is a 3.07, I have a 3.73 that came out of my dad's 71 GMC 6 cyl 3 spd truck that would work great with the overdrive trans. My brother had a truck almost identical to this when I was in high school in the 80's. It was 72 short step, originally 6 cyl, 3 spd, 3.73 rear gear. We built a very mild 355 and 2004r. With this drivetrain, we could SMOKE Monte SS's all day, and stay with the stock 5.0's Mustangs.

Unfortunately, I bought this truck with no title ($500), but I have a title for a 72 short bed 6 cyl truck that was totalled. i will keep the VIN tag so if I ever want to, I can get a bonded title here in Texas ($200-$300, I believe). I also have a VIN and glovebox w SPID for a 72 Cheyenne Super with no title that I kept for the same reason. It was beyond fixing, so I parted it out and kept the good stuff i wanted to use later.

The dash of the truck is sort of a silver with a green tint. I forgot to take a pic. I kind of like that color and may use it on the truck when I (if) I get to the point for paint...

After looking under the hood a little closer, the truck appears to have originally olive drab green on the outside. The inside silver green looks original. Sterring column is still a medium green color. Maybe I should restore it to these colors and call it "Sgt. Snorkel" (from Beetle Bailey)

IF you can find casting numbers somewhere on the block (usually on the drivers side rear) then you can go to a site called www.motrec.com and they have a listing for every chev engine. So if you find your number you find your engine size Hope that helps!!!
