headers and exhaust time - what do you think of this?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...DME:B:EF:US:11
I dont know if i did that link will work right but its for headers on ebay that look like they will fit my 69. - Has anyone used these? - Will they work as well as advertised? - For that shine and reliability is ceramic or SS a better way to go?

For about $75.00 more you can get a set of Hedman's ceramic coated with a 3/8 thick flange. I'm not a fan of the 1/4 inch flanges. Probably be ok with a fairly stock engine though.

I have no experience with these particular headers. But, they don't seem to be "extremely heavy duty" as advertised. 1/4" flange is a MIN. thickness you want for a street motor. 5/16" or 3/8" is better. Also, the 1-1/2" dia. primaries is a bit on the smallish size for anything other than pure stock. The ceramic coat is a plus, as it is very durable, but the better set-ups also have ceramic coating INSIDE the tubes as well. Do these? Maybe so...but the seller makes no mention. Also, what is the guage of the primary tubes? I'd say 16 ga. should be min. for heavy-duty. Again, no claim. Maybe they are. FYI, the Hedman Elites mentioned above are 14 ga. Also would like to get a look at the flange/tube connection. The White Performance units, linked above by Jimmydean, do make a good claim of the sealing ability of their units with the laser-cut flanges. But would those fit a truck. They claim they are for a car. IMHO, these are probably OK for a stock motor, and would certainly dress up a tired looking engine compartment. The fit is probably pretty good also, as the seller describes them as truck headers, not car headers. But there are some questions (above) that I'd ask B4 sending my $$.

Re: headers and exhaust time - what do you think of this?
and ... since the bed has to come off anyway for paint, should i remove it early to do my new exhaust or is it just as easy to do it from below? I want to keep driving it so i have to replace the rusted pipes now.

Re: headers and exhaust time - what do you think of this?
I am a huge fan of having a local shop that can bend pipe to make my exhaust for me. The cost is normally no more, often less. You will have a system that is many times better than you can do at home. Again the key is to find a shop that bends most if not all of thier own tubes, not a midas or tuffy style store.

Re: headers and exhaust time - what do you think of this?
The quote I got for my pipes from headers back was $225 with mufflers and I will be running 3/4 length headers (they are a little more work for pipes) at a shop down the street.
Just call around, it shouldn't be more than $200 if you have the mufflers. |

al's71gmc: My pipes are wicked easy because it's nearly a straight pipe the the mufflers, then a 45 degree dump straight down. It's only about 10' of 2.5" pipe, 2 mufflers (no name turbos) and 2 45 degree turn downs. It's a couple bends, but should be easy enough to do. It was $255 to run it out before the back tires. I would be cheaper if I decide to go with the Summit welded mufflers, I just don't know if I will or not. |

Jimmy , Those headers WILL NOT WORK, unless you are making your own motor mounts I bought them and the PS fits like a glove almost too tight and the DS won't even go on, they interfere with the motor stands, by about 1 1/2" http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...0124133&rd=1,1 Those are for the 88-95 Chevy truck and they fit great, but need a little clearence on the top of the DS frame rail, check out the last page in my build thread in my sig and see what was done to make them fit. They were cost effective too boot at $172 shipped for a ceramic coated header. They also come with an O2 bung that is plugged off if you decide later to do fuel injection. I am not sure if I can keep them inside the rails because the DS does come down a little further, but then again they will not interfere with the tranny linkage where as the camaro headers will. Just my .02...Randy

Re: headers and exhaust time - what do you think of this?
Recently got cat back from a shop, 2 1/2 inch with flowmasters for $480. At that shop the flows were $220 for the pair. So I'd guess about $260 without the mufflers. Some shops won't use your parts tho...
Edit- $225 with mufflers sounds awful cheap. Was that for single or duals? The shops I called wanted about $330 with no name turbos for 2 1/2 duals.

Thanks a lot Randy. I thought these were the ones that DID fit, good thing I didn't drop the coin yet. I will be ordering the ones you pointed out in a week and go from there.

YVW, I wish I would have known before I will be putting my set up on ebay soon I really like the way the front tube on the 88-95 come kinda of up a little and then back down, giving the space to run the plug wires under the headers to minimize their heat exposure and imo a cleaner look too Also they arefurther away from the starter on PS side with more room to get at the starter if the need arises.

FYI...here is a good link explaining the "ceramic coat process" and benefits.

Re: headers and exhaust time - what do you think of this?
I have a special powdercoating that isn't as good as ceramic, but is very close and it's easy to use. The main goal of the powder is heat loss and it is good to 1700 degrees (cures at 400).
The company I got the powder from offers a ceramic coating too, but without the polishing process, it's not much better than the powder. The only thing about the powder is it comes in flat black only. Not that I mind, but some people like shinny stuff. |
